Darin Ray Brown, 38, of Acton, MT went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday April 6, 2013 as he was flying home from the Wolf Point farm. He was born on July 2, 1974 to Dennis and Evonne Brown in Wolf Point.
Darin grew up on the family farm as the second of three boys and lived life with the motto of working hard and playing just as hard. He loved to build and create which resulted in many learning experiences, many of which ended him up in the ER and on the prayer chain. Darin loved farm life, riding motorcycles, driving fast, basketball and especially the cattle and animals. He fell in love with flying and at age 16, earned his pilot’s license. In spite of his adventuresome spirit, he had a tender heart especially towards the Lord and asked Jesus to take away his sins at the age of four.
He graduated from Lustre Christian High School in 1992 as valedictorian and went on to Montana State where he majored in Ag Tech. and minored in computers. At college, he fell in love with his future farm girl, Sarah Kelm, and they were married on Nov. 23, 1996. After graduation, he took her home to continue farming with his brothers and dad, with his main area being cattle. There, he started the bull sales for Brown Angus Ranch. Darin was especially skilled in mechanics, welding, building, family relations and jobs that were high and dangerous. In 2007, Darin left the cattle and made the transition to farming in Acton, MT where he enjoyed more time working along side his dad.
Darin was blessed with his five kids and loved to include them in his everyday work, especially working with and training his boys in farm responsibilities and in being young men of Godly character. Darin was always ready for wrestling with his kids, games, playing ball and snuggling with his girls. He loved reading, days on the lake skiing, visiting with friends, skiing, a good debate and anything competitive. Sarah and his kids were blessed first hand by his integrity, deep love for them and his joy in life.
Aside from farming, Darin loved the Lord deeply which motivated him as he enjoyed many years of challenging kids in his Lustre Sunday School class and entertaining them with many stories of his adventures, accidents and scars. From high school on, he spent many years teaching Awana kids, counseling at Beacon Bible Camp, leading a small group at church and was in his second term on the kids’ school board in Broadview.
Darin left behind his wife Sarah and their five children Michael, Zachary, Joshua, Grace and Hannah as well as his parents Dennis and Evonne, his brothers Robert (Yvonne)Brown, Jason (Stephanie) Brown, 21 nieces and nephews including two he loved but hadn’t met yet from Haiti, his grandparents Norbert and Alice Unger and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Darin’s passion for Heaven was made real and there he was reunited with his grandparents, Les and Helen Brown.
Celebrations of Darin’s life will be on Thursday April 11, 2013 at 2 pm at Faith Evangelical Church in Billings. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, 2013 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Darin was some one I looked up to way back in High School. He and his brothers gave me many rides to and from school, played basketball with me and helped cultivate my passion for waterskiing. (First time up on one ski was with Darin towing me. Then he dumped me in the cold river.) I lived with Darin for a short time in college and caught a few rides to and from Lustre. I am so sorry for your loss. I heard about the accident and didn’t think too much of it because I did not know Darin. The next day when I attended church it brought me to tears to see all the people in such sorrow at the passing of what seemed like a wonderful man. When I stopped to think I was like why am I crying I never did get to know Darin. I asked a church member and was told that I knew him through all of the family members and people who shared their memories. I wish I did get to know Darin because he seemed like such an amazing person. R.I.P Darin, I hope to meet you one day.

I read Darin’s obituary this morning and my heart was filled with sadness for all of you, his precious wife, children, parents and friends. On April 11, 1974, I lost my husband of ten years and my brother in an airplane accident. My two children were ages 5 & 7 at the time. Although we never understand why these bad things happen, we do have a God who loves us and provides for our comfort. Someday we will understand. My prayer is that you will be comforted as you hold each other and as you share the precious memories of your beloved Darin.

My condolences to Darin’s wife and children; you will be in our prayers and thoughts. I felt compelled to write to you because of the beautiful obituary Steve shared. J Johnson says
Dear Family and Friends of Darin Ray Brown, even though I did not personally know Mr. Brown, reading about his life was interesting and made me wish that I had known him. He had a variety of interests and added good to the lives of those who knew him. The loss of every human life is significant to me and should be valued by all. The Bible book of Hebrews reminds us that God does not forget all of the love and fine works shown by his servants (Heb 6:10). It was not God’s original purpose that mankind should suffer and die. At creation God was able to say that everything was “very good” (Gen 1:31) Death and imperfection was introduced through Adam’s disobedience (Genesis 2:17) and inherited by all mankind. Jesus’ sacrifice of his human life on earth again gave us hope of everlasting life and soon death will be no more (Revelation 21:4). Hopefully, faith in these Bible promises will ease the pain from this loss. Because of these promises we have reason to be hopeful and look forward to seeing Mr. Brown again in perfect health under Paradise conditions. We are also promised that the pain that we now experience with this loss “will not be called to mind.” (Isaiah 65:17) Meanwhile we have the opportunity to follow Jesus’ instruction to continue to take in Bible knowledge that leads to everlasting life (John 17:3).
Melva Foster says
Sarah…my heart goes out to you and your family. Even though I don’t know you….I had to let you know that almost 2 years ago…in June. Our daughter ‘s husband was tragically taken from us when a tree fell on his escavator that he was operating while helping his brother. He was about the same age as your husband. They have 3 children…right now their ages are 9, 6 and 4. I hope that someday you and my daughter could meet. I will be praying for you and your family. Your faith is what will get you through this. God be with you!! Melva

Robert Lee says
What a shock. When I heard of Darin’s passing I had such mixed feelings: sadness, hope, grief, memories, regret, joy, reflection, re-evaluation, peace, humility… I remember the Darin described above – the shirtless inter-tube rides doing 60 mph behind a snowmobile, record times to Chico and water fights all evening – the boy just would not quit, risk games until 3 am, griddin’-ribbin’-swimmin’, long theology debates in the SUB, a bachelor party that should go into some kind of record book, and a friendly and encouraging face that could pick up a conversation and friendship 10 years interrupted like it was yesterday. It would be no shock to anyone who had not seen Darin for 20 years to hear of his faithfulness to God, family and the local church – You knew when you met him that he was for real. Many people pass from this life but few bring a smile and warm feelings every time their name is mentioned. Darin will always be one of the latter for me and many others. I humbly offer my prayers to the Brown’s and Kelm’s as they go through this time of loss and my help, in anyway I can, for beyond that.

Brown Family I have many great memories of working on the Lustre and Billings Farm with all of you. I heard the news and was saddened my mind transported to those days we all worked together. I still have that video I made of the farming ranching and Schmek Fest. There was hard work and great interaction. I remember riding in the red Ford 4×4 with Darin he said I was sure driving careful ( in the pasture moving the bulls) to which Jason said let me or Darin drive if we wreck the truck we will be in trouble but you might lose your job ! Remember when we lost our dog “Dakota ” and we spent time flying searching for him Darin said he wanted to fly back then. I Love all of you and want to reserve some special time in Heaven with the Brown’s once again.

I was a student sent from California who attended Lustre h.s from 2004-06 and in my brief time there many people touched my heart like I could have never imagined. Coming from a broken home It felt as if I had 4 different sets of god parents who cared for me, and helped me deal with my problems for why I was sent there in the first place. Darin and Sara were amazing to me and had me over countless times to feed me and show me a good time with no reward in return. I’ll never forget the special cookies you always made for me Sara and I want you to know that you and your husband are a major reason why I got my life together and found the desire for a family of my own someday. Darin showed me that just because your tough doesnt mean you cant express your love to loved ones and its ok to help others.
My heart goes out to you as yours reached for me while in your community. Love , Brian
