In Memory Of

Darius Paul Stahl, age 58, of Colstrip

November 23, 1959 – February 15, 2018

Darius passed away the morning of February 15th, at his home in Colstrip, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Darius was born on November 23, 1959 in Stettler, Alberta, Canada to Paul and Elizabeth Stahl. He spent most of his childhood living on the Wildwood colony. At age 15, Darius decided that colony life wasn’t for him and he decided to take his own path. He worked various odd jobs and traveled the country with missionaries, until he made his home in Sumatra, Montana with his Aunt Rachel and Uncle Joe Hofer. For the next several years, Darius remained in the Ingomar area working at different ranches until finally finding a home on the Friez Ranch, on Armells Creek where he made a home for his two daughters, Bailey and Kenzie. Darius loved working for Joe and Leonard Friez, and it is here that he spent many happy years ranching, farming, teaching his daughters to ride, and raising amazing gardens from which he generously shared produce with friends and neighbors.  Daily life on Armells Creek for Darius and the neighbors was something he enjoyed greatly. After leaving the Friez ranch, Darius ended up back in Ingomar working at the Galt Ranch. He married his wife, Thelma, in 2007. They moved to Colstrip and have spent their years traveling and enjoying life together with stepson Justin.

Darius loved life and making people laugh. He loved to be the center of attention, entertaining at any opportunity with jokes, teasing, and an ever-present song. These memories will be treasured by everyone who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by his father Paul Stahl, nephew Matthew Waldner, and brother-in-law Pete Waldner.

He is survived by the love of his life, Thelma Stahl, daughters Bailey and Kenzie Stahl, stepson Justin, mother Elizabeth Stahl, brother Paul Stahl (Nan), sisters Dorothy Reid (Bruce), Miriam Waldner (Ernie), Helen Frayn (Kevin), Kathy Iwaasa (Milton), and nieces and nephews, Kimberley and Monty Magnuson, Samantha, Zac, and Nikki Stahl, Cole Waldner, Riley and Ally Frayn, and Coby Iwaasa.</p>

Darius was a great man. We had many fun times camping and boating at Tongue River Reservoir with our families and friends. Those were the times we all made new friends, many of which have become family. He always could bring laughter to a situation no matter how bleak the situation. Thank you, Darius, for being a great friend, comedian, & understanding man. My son still is in awe at your bed roll that you brought camping. He loved your stories of being horse back for days and checking fence while working on the ranch his grandpa grew up on. Thanks for keeping the memories alive. You will never be forgotten my friend.
