Maheo, the Great Spirit of the Universe, called home David Andrew Walks Along, Sr. a father, brother, son, uncle, grandpa and good friend to the many people who crossed paths with this Northern Cheyenne man. His given Cheyenne name is Walking Bear or Nakohetameoste. David was born at Crow Agency hospital on September 25, 1966 and went to the peaceful spring-time Cheyenne camp in early April, 2019. He died in an apparent drowning incident along the Tongue River near Ashland, Montana and the family is very grateful that he was found since he was being missed by his family and friends at his usual hangouts. Like his six brothers and one sister he was raised on a small cattle ranch north of Lame Deer, Mt. He grew up riding horses, doing ranch-work, hunting, fishing, camping and living a free exciting life. David went to Head Start and elementary school in Lame Deer and high school at Colstrip High School. He was also a student a Chief Dull Knife College.
David was a kind-hearted human being loved being part of the work force with his friends and neighbors. His first job was as a wildland firefighter, followed by work as a custodian at the Hardin Schools, cleaning cattle trucks at Hardin, construction work, tree planting, recovery work for the Space Shuttle Columbia in Texas, tree-planting and thinning and his last “big” job was doing relief work in Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. He grew up with the North-Siders playing along Lame Deer Creek, horseback riding and hunting in the hills, listening to some good tunes with his bro Mike Big Back and planning next cool adventure with the boys. In his adult life his family and friends were everything to him and we know as family he battled with addiction, however, when the “chips are down” David was a Cheyenne man you could count on. When he needed a place to rest he often stayed at Auntie Agnes Bear’s ranch along the Tongue River. He was a strong man and he told his brothers he had more than nine lives and was ready to help out any time.
David, Sr. is preceded in death by his parents Joe, Sr. and Victoria Walks Along, paternal grandparents Hugh and Mamie Walks Along, maternal grandparents Frank and Rose Long Jaw, brother Victor and infant son Ernest Daniel. He is survived by his children Davetta (Delbert) BlackHair, Michael and David Andrew, Jr. Walk Along, grandsons Isaac and Kaiden. Other survivors include: James (Viola), Joe, Jr. (Lynn), William (Clarice), John (Patti), Isaac (Lori) and Sharon (John)Threefingers. David had many special nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.
He often mentioned his fond memories with his former companion Mary Big Day, the mother of his children and later his time with Mildred Redcherries and his special adopted granddaughter Sotaae Tallbull who calls him Papa. Many of David’s cousin-brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, friends and grandparents preceded him in death. He was proud to be of Northern Cheyenne heritage and to have helped out and supported the work done by Mildred at the Sand Creek.Massacre site in Colorado.
David’s Northern Cheyenne family are: Whitewolfs, Limberhands, Bigbacks, Longjaws, Marshalls, Bearcomesouts, Bradys, Yellowrobes, Baileys, Bearquivers, Beartusks, Wolfnames, Limpys, Littlewhirlwinds. The family apologizes if we have missed including your family in David’s list of extended family. David is with our ancestors and family who have gone before us sharing the journey he went on during his life.
