David Allen Hauk, age 62, of Miles City formerly of Philip, SD passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014 at his home near Miles City surrounded by his family.
David was born on June 20, 1951 in Wall, South Dakota to Margaret “Peggy” (Clark) and George Hauk. He attended Lincoln Grade School just north of the farm until starting high school in Philip. Dave graduated from Philip High School in 1969. Dave was the oldest of four boys, who when growing up were some of his best partners in crime. Dave attended college at Black Hills State until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1971. Basic training took him to Ft. Lewis, Washington and later to be stationed in DaNang, Vietnam until being Honorably Discharged on April 2, 1972. Dave was married to Roxanne Berry on December 14, 1974. From this union two children were born, Michael and Lisa. They ranched and worked for Philip Livestock until 1979. At which time they moved to Quinn, South Dakota and started a construction company. Dave and Roxanne continued to ranch and work in the Philip area until Dave moved to Montana in 1998. While in Montana, Dave worked for Big R in Bozeman. He took great pride in his job and a promotion came that brought him to Miles City, Montana in 1999 where he was the manager of Murdoch’s formerly Big R. He also was able to fulfill a lifelong dream to ranch in Montana with his son Mike. He found great contentment in Eastern Montana, even though home was always Western South Dakota. Dave later worked at Cowtown Ag Supply until he decided to semi retire and be a full time Grandpa.
Dave was competitive at heart whether it be playing a game of pitch or following his Duke Blue Devils in the NCAA. He also enjoyed fishing in Alaska and shooting guns with his grandson Jaxon. Some of Dave’s greatest accomplishments were being the recipient of the Bronze Star, learning how to fly with his first solo flight in 1999 and being a Western South Dakota Buckaroo since 1980. Some of the favorite loves in Dave’s life were his kids and grandkids, Hereford cows, and horses.
Dave was preceded in death by his father George Hauk. Thankful for sharing his life are: his mother, Peggy Hauk of Grindstone, SD; three brothers: Doug (Fay) Hauk of Philip, SD; Dan (Cindy) Hauk of Wall, SD, Duane (J’nai) Hauk of Grindstone, SD, his son Mike (Tracy) Hauk, and grandsons Jaxon and Jhett of Miles City, MT; daughter Lisa (JD) Wendt, and granddaughters: Jaelyn, Macey and Taylor of Newell, SD; and his most special friend Linda Harwood, Miles City, MT. Along with many nieces, nephews and grandnieces. Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Linda, Mike, Tracy and boys,
Praying for your continued strength in this time of sorrow and healing. Dave was a great man and will be missed dearly. I have very fond memories of our days together at Big R back in my college days and Dave was my work dad that tried to keep me out of mischief. 😉 He nicknamed me Psycho and to this day I am not sure why…..I think it was my high energy and that I was and 18 year old girl running wild. I hadn’t seen Dave in a long while and about five years ago I stopped in at CanAm to see him. There he was, and as I said hi to him, he looked at me with a puzzled look on his face and said, “Psych, how’ve you been”. I honestly had forgetten that he’d every nicknamed me that but found some humor in his memory. I could go on and on…..but I am truly thankful that he was a part of my life. He showed some tough love at times but he was always great to me. His memories will live on. Hugs to all of you and god bless.

Growing up together from babies to seniors in high school there never was a dull moment. The Hawk boys, Dean girls, and myself kept each other entertained. The late night hide and seek in the hay fields on our horses, sledding on the big hill just north east of Dave’s home and down the road ditch at school, playing ball, and the many other antics we could think of. How special we all felt at school on May Day when Peggy would make us all baskets from sample wall paper book pages and fill them with popcorn and homemade fudge. Dave was always a great friend and willing to help out in any way he could. May your memories bring smiles and laughter to your days ahead as God strengthens you through this loss.

Diana Dean "Deutscher" Norman says
I was deeply saddened and shocked by the loss of such a special person as Dave. I remember the great conversations, laughter and over heard plots of adventures that were undertaken by Dave with my brother Doss. If there was fun and trouble to find they made the most of it. They so enjoyed their escapades and friendship. It saddens my heart to know Dave is gone. To those left behind we will have to learn ways to hold this special man in our hearts. May those positive memories, thoughts and prayers warm us and bring comfort as do mine. I still can hear his laughter…
