David Howard Powell 55 of Ashland Mt. began his journey on August 3rd, 2022. David was born on April 9, 1967, in Milwaukee Wisconsin to Gloria Killsontop and Tom LaGarde. He had many fond memories of growing up on Muddy Creek with his adopted parents Bernice and Howard Powell. David was a proud member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. He graduated from Colstrip high school in 1985 where he excelled in sports. It was in high school where he met his lifelong friend Shawn Wahl. In 1988 David met his first love of his life, Melanie Curley, they had four children together. Karissa, Dashawna, David jr. and Cecilia Powell. David also welcomed his second oldest daughter Rose Harris with Melinda Harris. Later in life David married Georgia Marie Powell and made his home in Ashland Mt.
David worked many jobs in his lifetime, from wildland firefighter to heavy equipment operator, he was a Jack of all trades. He was a member of IUOE Local 400 at one of his favorite jobs as a dozer operator at Western Energy. David was hard working, kind and considerate, and never turned down anyone in need. David touched everyone who met him. He was the epitome of a outdoorsman from fishing to hunting. He loved the mountains. Life was an adventure and he lived it to the fullest. He had a passion for life, and he passed that passion to his children. Everyone has a David story A memory to take with us and retell of how crazy and wonderful he was. Prayers to Powell Family and Maria Powell
David was a hard working man. With a big heart. kind hearted person. David was a brother to me growing up since we both grew up on Muddy Creek. He was at our house most of the time or with his my down the road Bernice Powell and Dad Howard Powell. Class of 1985 of Colstrip High School. He played football and was in Track his junior & Senior yr. Still remember when they played Roundup Panthers Mike, Vaughn, Mickey and David knocked the offensive line of Roundup, some ended in the hospital. David at the school record in track for Shot Put & Discus but he did not get in on the board, because we were Class B then and we where competing against Class A schools. This was the best two years of High School. The football team was ranked high. Every team hated play the Colstrip Colts.
David loved to help us brand, an out standing wrestler with calves, I think the 300 lb. calves were more scared of him. When his Dad passed away (Howard) that is when David had to grow up quick, to take care of his Mom and take care of there Ranch; cows and horses and chickens.
My two brothers Billy and David they would be in the hills hunting well scoping out for winter time where to find the biggest Buck out there. David loved being out in the Hills or the Mountains, as he called it GOD’S COUNTRY Muddy Creek. We will always miss you David RIP Prayers. You have greener pastures & bigger Bucks. Give my Dad a hug tell him I miss him.

Sending my sincere condolences to the Family of David. I grew up with him through grade school and high school. In grade school David, Crawford Lonewolf, Darrell Hiwalker, Lew Headswift, and I hung out most of the summertime running around in the hills of Lame Deer, swimming in Tommy’s Creek. Those were the good ole days! Rest in peace friend.
