Dean lost a hard fought battle with cancer on July 28, 2020.
He was born on November 13, 1948 in Hardin, MT to Dorothy (Tweeter) Pitt Newman and Sidney Ivan Newman. He and his 2 brothers, Rodney and Stanley, were raised by their Uncle Albert and Aunt Jean Newman on various ranches in Eastern Montana. Dean graduated from Ingomar High School in 1967, Valedictorian of his class. (He always joked that was because he got one less “F” than Bruce Cross!)
Dean was involved in the sports of rodeo and basketball winning several trophies throughout his younger years. Having competed in the National High School Rodeo in 1967 in both saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling and secured 3rd place in steer wrestling.
On September of 1969, he was drafted into the Army, with the 101st Airborne Division. He served in Vietnam from April 10, 1970 to August 3, 1970, stationed out of Hue, Vietnam. While there, he was awarded the Viet Nam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, Combat Infantryman Badge and Purple Heart.
After about 2 weeks after being discharged from the Army, he entered and won the Saddle Bronc Riding at the Brockway Dairy Days Rodeo and met his future wife, Linda Hanley LaBree. After a “whirlwind” courtship, they were married on December 18, 1971.
To this union, he gained a step-daughter, Jona Rae LaBree and then 3 daughters, Tara, Mauri and Jami.
Dean was very involved in his girls’ lives, encouraging them in any sports they wanted to try which ended up to be rodeo and basketball. The family traveled thousands of miles transporting them to events and cheering them on! He was very proud of all of his little “overachievers” and they have all made him very proud. And, of course, this was carried over to all of his grandkids…he loved watching them all play in their sporting events. He was usually a very “vocal” spectator which got him into hot water with the referees quite often!!
The family lived in several different communities throughout the years which included Melstone, Winnett, Rapelje, Shepherd, Winifred and Roundup.
His career path was mainly working on, managing and leasing ranches with a stint of Private Livestock Investigating in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Indiana, and Mississippi for Cattlco, out of Memphis, TN for about 5 years.
Dean is preceded in death by his father, Sidney Newman, mother, Dororthy Scherer, daughter, Jona Murray, uncle, Albert Newman.
Survivors include daughters, Tara (Neil) Bradley and Nikia; Mauri (Kelvin) Elness and Jorden DeHaven and Laynee; Jami DeHaven and Logan, Jaxen and Treylen. Grandsons, Wyatt (Victoria) Walkowski and Dru Walkowski. Brother-in-law, Justin (Carolina) Hanley, Austin, Emily, Hannah and Ava. Brothers, Rodney (Cristy) Newman and Stanley (Bette) Newman. Aunt Jean Newman, and Wally Newman, Howard (Johnna) Newman and Marlene (Fred) Rule as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
