Graveside Service: Friday 10:00 am Aug. 13, 2010 at the Custer County Cemetery
Debra Smokov Smokie, age 95, of Miles City, Mt died at Holy Rosary Hospital on Aug. 5, 2010.
She was born to Russian parents Dimitri James Smokoff and Anna Petroe. They just moved from Russia to North Dakota to start a new life. She was born in North Dakota and her family moved to a farm in Broadus where she grew up with seven other siblings. Deboras father Americanized the last name by taking off the V and adding off. Debra kept her spelling the same as the old country. They all helped on the farm, and went to school in Broadus. Debra graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City. She worked for Dr. Snodgrass in Miles City, and also at the Miles City Star for a short time. She then went to Seattle to work at a hotel. In 1942 she moved back to Miles City and has lived here since.
Debra is survived by one brother; Robert Smokoff of Kenmore, WA, and a Nephew, Dean Smokoff of Seattle, WA.
Along with her parents she is preceded in death by 3 brothers; George, Pete, and Tommy, and 3 sisters; Dorothy, Vera, and Irene.
Graveside service will be, Friday 10:00 am Aug. 13, 2010 at the Custer County Cemetery. Stevenson and Sons of Miles City are in charge with the arrangements.
