Dennis Hjorth, age 91 of Fallon, passed away at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive, MT with family by his side.
Dennis was born on June 11, 1926 to Christ and Amelia (Starr) Hjorth in Glendive, MT. Dennis was the second oldest of three children: Ivan and Marvin. He grew up on the family farm in Fallon attending schools in Thorson, Fallon and Terry. When he was a senior in High School he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. Dennis served in the Regimental Weapons Company in the battle for Iwo Jima. After being wounded in the war, Dennis was honorably discharged where he went back to the family farm to help out. He also worked various jobs for Buffalo Rapids and Shell Oil hauling crude oil. Over time he and his brother Ivan took over the family farm which was his true joy in life. On October 23, 1954 he married Margaret “Maggie” Manion. To this marriage they had four children: Carleen, Sharon, Christie and Doug. Together they farmed in the Fallon Flats for many years. They were the last of the original owners of the Fallon Buffalo Rapids Project. Every year the family would take family vacations after wheat harvest and before beet harvest. Dennis served on the Fallon Sewer Board, the Fallon Rural Fire Department, both Fallon and Terry School Boards, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was an active member in the Hope American Lutheran Church in Fallon and was a big part in helping move the church from Marsh to where it stands in Fallon today. Dennis loved to collect antique tools, playing cards (especially pinochle) and enjoyed fishing. Maggie and Dennis used to enjoy bowling together, making regular trips into Glendive for league. Above all Dennis was a family man, loving his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dennis was preceded in death by his wife Maggie, his parents, his brother Marvin and a sister in law Maureen Hjorth. He is survived by his son Douglas (Connie) of Fallon, MT; three daughters: Christie (Kent) Liles of Lindsay, MT; Sharon (Steve) Macioroski of Glendive, MT; and Carleen (Don) Gaub of Fallon, MT; a brother Ivan Hjorth; eight grandchildren: Shane Macioroski, Scott Macioroski, Jason Liles, Laci Donnelly, Bridget Schwartz, Christ Hjorth, Beth Gaub and Cassie Gaub; fifteen great grandchildren and a sister in law Delores Hjorth. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Scott Waldo says
Looking back to when I was growing up, it is hard to think of a guy I looked up to more than Dennis. An incredibly solid guy who always seemed to enjoy life and he was there for the community again and again and again. Seeing how he lived his life made me look at how I was living mine and try to do better.
We are all less because of his passing but better for having had him with us for so many years.
My sympathy to all of you,
Scott Waldo

Sending thoughts and prayers to the Hjorth family. Have such fond memories of Dennis. I babysat for the Hjorth children on a regular schedule when Dennis and Maggie went to Glendive to bowl so my acquaintance with Dennis goes back a long way. Dennis always made a big effort to be sure to say hello and have a conversation every time we visited church in Fallon. Remembering so many times he read the lessons and even gave the sermon. What a wonderful man. Hold the memories tight. You can be very proud of your Dad.
