In Memory Of

Dodie Paxson, age 68, of Miles City.

February 16, 1953 – March 28, 2021

A force of nature, technicolor storyteller, and friend to all, Flora May “Dodie” Paxson passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family the evening of Sunday, March 28. The youngest of three children, Dodie was born in Glendive, MT, on February 16, 1953 to Donald and Catherine McDonald.
Wild as the prairie grass that lines Garfield County, Dodie grew up on the McKerlick Ranch outside of Jordan, MT and later moved to Flat Creek where her family raised sheep and cattle. Hallmarked by her red hair, freckles, and razor-sharp wit, Dodie started her education at age 5 and attended Van Norman School. A bright student, Dodie also had an innate ability to get into mischief. This propensity for shenanigans carried into adulthood and would be one of Dodie’s most endearing qualities.
During her high school years in Jordan, Dodie split time evenly between the ranch and town (usually kicking up a considerable amount of gravel and dust along the way.) She enjoyed socializing with friends, cheerleading, and worked as a nurse’s aide at the hospital in Jordan. Serving as a shoulder to cry on, caring for people, and rooting for them along the way were qualities she cultivated early. When Dodie hugged you, she squeezed with her whole heart; she was always the last one to let go from an embrace.
After high school Dodie worked at the rest home in Miles City and was later hired as a Mountain Bell phone operator and union representative. Sometimes moonlighting as a drag racer, you could often find Dodie cruising around in her green and white 442—an affinity for cars she shared with Neal Paxson, who she married on June 6, 1975 in Billings, MT.
On September 26, 1977, Neal and Dodie welcomed daughter Nicole to the family. Dodie was so proud of their new bundle, and motherhood fit her like one of her driving gloves. The trio soon moved to Jordan where they purchased the Conoco gas station. The family’s joy multiplied on August 17, 1980, when they welcomed identical triplets Ryan, Royce, and Rory to the clan. The odds of naturally conceiving identical triplets is literally one in a million, but that’s Dodie—one in a million.
The family moved to Powell, WY briefly and then relocated to Miles City in 1994 where the kids played sports and finished high school (Dodie’s distinctive cheers thundering from the grandstands). Dodie and Neal also opened Paxson’s Flooring during this time, and if you stopped in for carpet samples, you often left three hours later filled with laughter and all caught up on the news of the day.
Dodie loved spending time at the family cabin at Hell Creek, where visitors were always welcome and a warm pot of something spectacular was brewing on the stove. A talented cook, Dodie was known for her famous goulash, pot roast, and Scottish shortbread. She loved her annual holiday tradition of dropping off canisters of shortbread to those near and far.
Dodie shared a special bond with her siblings Katie and Duncan, a closeness and care instilled by their parents to always take care of each other and put family first. She treated nieces, nephews, and extended family like they were her own—everyone’s favorite aunt. Dodie also wore the badge of “Granny” with pride and cherished the special time and connection she had with her littles.
Generous with her time and heart, Dodie knew how to pick you up when you were feeling down, never forgot a birthday, and was a loyal, trusted friend to many. She was the first contact on your “call-when-I’m-in-trouble” list and the best person to have in your corner because she just might take a couple swings at a faulted foe on your behalf.
An epic storyteller, Dodie had a way with words—especially those of the four-letter variety—and was never afraid to speak her mind. So many of Dodie’s quips and quotables (many of which might only be appropriate at cocktail hour) will carry on for generations.
A character to be sure, Dodie also had a kind heart and special way of always making you feel like you were her favorite. She fiercely loved and protected her family, was the glue to her crew, and the heart of her clan. Dodie leaves behind a legacy of love that stretches from Miles City to Scotland and an irreverent sense of humor that will have the angels in heaven belly laughing from here to eternity. We will cling to our ample supply of memories for comfort, but your absence has sent shockwaves through our family and community. Daughter, wife, sister, mother, aunt, granny, and friend, we will love and cherish you always.
Dodie was preceded in death by her mother, Catherine McDonald, father, Donald McDonald, father-in-law, John Paxson, mother-in-law, Margaret Paxson, sister-in-in law, Betty Paxson, nephew Scott Paxson, cousins Duff and Betty McDonald, Tootie and Jim Burnett, Pots and Peggy McDonald, Babe McDonald, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins from Scotland.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Neal Paxson, their four children, Nicole (Dan) Friend; their children Madison, McKenna, McCormick, Gavin, and Roderick. Ryan Paxson; his sons Ryan and Kayden. Royce (Jolene) Paxson; their son John and daughters Paisley and Scotlyn. Rory (Sami) Paxson; their son Colter and daughter Alivia. Sister Katie (Glenn) Hageman; their daughter Heather (Chris) Dahl, daughter Brittany (Bobby) Cremer; their sons Cameron and Kellyn Cremer, and son MacLeod Hageman. Brother Duncan (Halle) McDonald and their sons Donald (Amber) McDonald; their children Trevor (Jaci), Alex, Grace, Duncan, and Maggie; Scott (Mega) McDonald; their children Drew, Donald, and Dalilah. Cousins Ava (Kenny) Boschee, Jodi Rhodes, and Jimmy Burnett; Scott (Cathy) McDonald, Craig (April) McDonald, Kyle (Jackie) McDonald, Rob (Kara) McDonald, Carol McDonald, Colin (Kathy) McDonald, Kenny (Jennifer) McDonald, John Paxson, Sean (Katie) Paxson, Jenny (Jamie) Sanchez and countless friends and extended family.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Bible Church in Miles City. Neal and family, my heart just absolutely hurts for all of you at this time. We often wonder why God chooses the ones he does at the time of their passing and we feel anger, fear, hurt, and sadness, along with the thought that they truly are not gone. It is truly unbelievable that this wonderful, loving, hilarious and caring woman is gone, but the wonderful memories that you have made will sustain you and give you some peace and hope that she lives on through each of you.

  74. Stacie Hilderman-Fellingham says

    March 30, 2021 at 8:48 pm

My heart is so incredibly broken. The world will never be the same or as colorful without you. I’m not sure you will ever realize what you meant to me. You were another mom to me and treated me as such whether it meant getting my butt beat or you cheering for me loud and proud and ALWAYS ended with you having my back even when I was wrong. Some of my best and fondest childhood memories include you. I’m so incredibly grateful for the past two years of our late night talks catching up on gossip and reliving memories. Growing up with the Paxson clan was one of the sweetest things I’ll ever do.

Neil, Nicole, Royce, Rory, Ryan, and all of your family members are in my prayers. I wish I could take away your pain. But I hope it gives you peace knowing how incredibly loved she was and what an impact she made on those around her. She will be forever missed and loved beyond measure.

Heaven for sure got a lot more exciting and blessed when she arrived! ❤️❤️

Our thoughts are with all Dodie’s family and friends. Although I only met Dodie, when the family were visiting my late husband, their cousin, Donald, in Lochcarron, Scotland, a couple of years ago. I felt as if I’d known her since I married, thirty plus years ago. Donald was very fond of his cousins in Montana. He spoke of them often. Much love to you all. 💔💔💔

MY deepest sympathy to the family of Dodie Paxson. I did not think that I would be reading her obituary now. The last time I saw her was on her birthday, full of life and love. Always loved her from the time she was a small child. Rest In Peace Dodie, and I know Heaven is going to be livened up.

I am so thankful that I was able to see Dodie and Neal when I was in Miles City. She always had a story and I will never forget the last one she told me about her and my Uncle Tom bickering between the two of them. My childhood was blessed with knowing the McDonald/Paxton clan. They were a fun lively bunch and they were real. My heart is hurting. Sending big love and strong hugs to you all.
