Our family and community sadly lost a pillar on March 14, 2019, when Doris Lee Dunning, passed away from natural causes. Her contributions to the lives of many as a friend and to many others by including them as an extension of her family, are part of what made her life so special.
Doris Lee was born at a home near Sayle, MT on July 8, 1926 and graduated from Sheridan High School. She was preceded in death by daughter, Dianne, husband, Lee, her parents, George Wynkoop and Essie (Surrena) Wynkoop, and one brother, Dale Wynkoop. She is survived by two sons and two daughters; Denny, Dee, Debbie and Darla, along with their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A rancher all her life, Doris Lee lived a generous, active life in partnership with her husband Lee. In the early years they were known for raising quality horses. Extras were always welcome at her dining room table and no one left hungry. She managed to gracefully raise their kids and, now and then, some grandkids and friend’s kids too. She cooked excellent meals, kept a tidy house, made clothes for the family and spent as much of her life on the back of a horse as possible. At branding time she was quite handy at yielding the irons for perfect placement of the brand. It was amazing that she always appeared like she was going to town instead of going out to hay or work cattle. Kids and animals of all kinds were always a passion of Doris Lee’s, which showed through her horse trading ability, hauling kids to stock shows and rodeos and simple respect for even the smallest of animals. For a variety in life she sometimes worked outside jobs such as Teacher’s Aide and Fire Watch on the lookout towers. Later in life she enjoyed short trips travelling with friends, making it as far as England.
Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with and those she took under her wing and gave a safe place to reside when needed. Share your stories of remembrance at a Memorial Service on Monday, May 6, 2019 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus, MT at 1:00 p.m. You can help continue her kindness and compassion by making a donation to, or volunteering at your local Animal Shelter.
