Dorothy M. Garrett, age 87, of Miles City passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Dorothy was born on May 1, 1923 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Minnie (Huber) Handke. She grew up and attended schools in Minnesota and graduated from Breckenridge High School. Following graduation, she attended Moorehead Teachers College for two years, receiving her teaching certificate. She then taught at rural schools in Breckenridge, Minnesota. Dorothy married Walter Garrett on August 30, 1944 in Breckenridge, Minnesota. They moved to Miles City, Montana where they owned and operated Garrett Feed Company. Dorothy worked in retail sales for McDonalds and Morfords. She also worked the Bucking Horse Sales at the Bison Bar and worked the front desk at the Olive Hotel. They moved to Terry from 1993 2008. She moved back to Miles City and into Eagles Manor in 2008. Dorothy was involved in the Naomi Circle, Area on Aging, Beta Sigma Phi, active with the Terry Hospital and Senior Center and the Terry School Reading Program. She was also a member of the Elks Does, Ladies Eagles Auxiliary and held past offices.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Candice Bluechel and her husband Rod of Kennewick, WA; a grandson, Josef Grant Bluechel and his wife Renee; her brother and sisters: Joyce Grossman of Sunny Isles Beach, FL; Gerald Handke of St. Paul, MN; Elaine Norman of Sunny Isles Beach, FL; and Marty Wood of Panama City, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Walter Garrett.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City, MT.
