Dorothy attended elementary school at St. Labre and highschool at Busby, she graduated high school in 1962. Dorothy was married to Dennis Glen Swank and to this union she gave birth to three children. Dennis took his journey in 1964 leaving Dorothy and their three children. Dorothy later married Dennis Holds the Enemy (Bighair) and to this union gave birth to one son.
In her earlier years Dorothy grew up in the Ree-District area along Rosebud Creek. She enjoyed horseback riding, traveling and team dancing at pow-wows. Her team dancing consisted of herself, her sisters, Rhoda G. and Rosita S., her friends, Dolly Sandcrane and Marlene Seminole. They would compete at the 4th of July Pow-wow and would often place 1st. She also enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino.
Dorothy worked for the Northern Cheyenne Head Start Program for 50 years, started as a classroom teacher and retired as the health program manager.
Dorothy was the first teacher to obtain her C.D.A (certified Child Development Associate). She later obtained her bachelor’s degree in Education from Eastern Montana College.

Dorothy at the age of 76 took her journey on Jan. 19th 2019 surrounded by family at the St.Vincent’s Hospital at 8:26 p.m. Prior to her last heartbeat she reached out to whom we believe were angels waiting to escort her on her journey to her heavenly home.

My Montana Family…..my heart hurts and I share ur loss. I am honored to have had an Aunt who lived life and loved until she was called to join all the others there waiting to welcome her home to the other camp. I am also very appreciative and humbled to have been included as part of her adopted family. Many of u may not know me but Grandma Josephine adopted me as her grandson in June/July of 1976 in Washington DC. I was 15 years old. We were both participants at the Festival of American Folklife. She was there representing the Northern Cheyennes and I was there representing the Kiowa and Comanche Tribes from Oklahoma. That was almost 50 years ago and that relationship never died off. It only got stronger as time went along. We wrote and kept in contact at lest 3-4 times a year and always at Christmas. She always shared her love and told me about the family I needed to go to Montana to meet. Unfortunately I never got to go to Busby until after she was already gone but I was blessed and honored to meet, share a meal and the love that Grandma Josephine had through meeting almost but one of her children. That will always be a highlight of my life. I remember specifically Aunt Dorothy’s love and smile. She had that same love Grandma Josephine had. I know they are happy and having that reunion that we all will hopefully have there all together one day. Love u ALL my Montana family and thank u for including me and my family. I tell every one of my kids and grandkids and relatives I’m honored happy and proud to have my family in Montans. Love u all and ur in my prayers every morning! Aho!

Dorothy was a wonderful lady. I always enjoyed working with her and visiting with her. She was a hard worker that really enjoyed the children she worked with. She had a big, kind heart. Dorothy was a great story teller and many of her stories made us laugh. I miss you Dorothy but know you are now at peace. Sincere condolences to all of you.
