Dorothy Elizabeth Madsen Hutchison, 100, died Friday, July 22, 2005 at Parkview Caring in Miles City.
She was born June 5, 1905 at Rochester, Minnesota, the daughter of Theodore Arthur and Minna Lind Madsen. The family later moved to Canada, back to Minnesota, and then to a homestead in Montana on Ash Creek near the Mizpah. Dorothy stayed with relatives in Minnesota and graduated from high school in Nashwauk. She attended normal school in Miles City and taught at Springcreek School.In 1927 Dorothy was married to B.C. "Buzz" Hutchison. They moved to Long Beach, California when their son Dick was a baby, moving back to Montana four years later.
In 1933 they went to work for Henry Sawtell near Sonnette and stayed on the Sawtell Ranch until it was sold in 1948. During the building of nearby Highway 212 Dorothy, in addition to feeding her family and ranch hands, cooked for the highway crew, feeding them in three shifts.The Hutchisons then leased the Rollo Hart Ranch on Tongue River for several years before moving to Miles City. When they later bought the Levi Mackin Ranch on Pumpkin Creek, Dorothy split her time between the ranch and working at the Ingham Hotel. Later she worked for Maxine Seekins in her craft shop.
Dorothy liked to bowl and square dance and she also loved crafts, making more than 150 afghans, all of which she gave away to family and mends. She had a strong work ethic and always had to be doing her "handwork".
She is survived by one son, Dick Hutchison and his wife Mary, one brother, Art Madsen and his wife, Blanche, all of Miles City, one sister, Dagmar Perish and her husband, Lyman of Kalispell, one grandson, John Hutchison and his wife Joyce of Glendive, one granddaughter, Jody Smith and her husband, Dave; of Miles City, a special nephew, LeRoy Brittenham and his wife B.J., of Gravois Mills, Missouri, seven great grandchildren, one great- great grandson, and many "favorite" nieces and nephews.Preceding her in death were her husband, B.C. "Buzz" Hutchison, one infant son, Donald, two brothers, Theodore and Vernon, one sister, Evelyn Lave, a special niece, Lorraine Madsen Parker, and two great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2005 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the family to receive friends from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 25, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with the Reverend Bob Thaden officiating. Interment will follow in the family location of the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City. Following interment, a luncheon will be held at the Eagles.Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
