Douglas E. Smith, lifetime resident of Miles City passed away on May 25, 2011 at the Community Health Center (VA).

Douglas was born on October 23, 1944 to Donald and Donna Smith and joined two brothers Matt and Wayne. He completed school and college at Miles Community College. Most of his early working years were for Milwaukee Railroad as a carman and as an engineer which was interrupted by a stint with the Army. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in the Army, serving during Vietnam. After doing some roofing, driving wells and being a guard in Colstrip he worked 14 years at Montana Correctional Facility. In 1980, he married Bonnie Peters (Babcock) and shared the lives of her four children. In 1998, he became disabled and was home for 5 years then spent 7 years in EMVH in Glendive. He moved to the VA in Miles City where he was in Hospice for the last six weeks.

Doug could fix anything you handed him and with either left or right hand. He loved to fish for trout, especially near Harlowton and many other places (any nice stream!) Several years he traveled to the mountains for elk hunting and did lots of deer and antelope hunting. The cold weather didn't bother him while trapping. Some of his favorite things to do were listening to music, enjoyed dancing and really favored small children. Usually giving them a quarter or sometimes a dollar! He was especially proud of his vehicles, namely his red and white jeep and his red 72 Plymouth. Doug was a lifetime member of the VFW and was a longtime member of the Eagles. He attended Sunday school and Bible camps with First Baptist Church.

Doug is survived by wife of 31 years, Bonnie; brothers: Wayne (Kathy) and Matt (Linda); two step children: Michelle Jone's of Miles City, MT and Scott Babcock of California; step grandchildren: Ethan and Chalice Jone's, Savannah Babcock and Sam Larson. He is also survived by his nieces: Kim (Jerry and Kayla Barnaby), Kristine (Darwin and Brandon Thrams), Cynthia Smith and a nephew, Scott (Lori and Amanda Smith) and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and many special friends. Doug was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Donna; and two step children: Brent and Todd Babcock. Visitation will be held on Monday,
