Douglas William Gaskill, 86, passed away Sunday night, June 4, 2023 at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, MT after a short illness.
Doug was born in Miles City, MT to William and Mardee Gaskill on April 12, 1937, and grew up on the family ranch on Pumpkin Creek. In 1941, brother Dallas joined the family. These boys remained very close throughout their lives. As a kid, Doug showed an early interest in machines of any kind, particularly gas engines, electric motors, pumps, etc., in other words, anything he could take apart and put back together. For 80 years this remained true. During his life, Doug became a true Allis-Chalmers man, orange blooded and well versed in all things AC.
Doug married Jackey Daniels on February 23, 1956 in Livingston, MT. They welcomed their son, Doug, Jr. in 1958, and that same year moved from Pumpkin Creek to the George Daniel’s place on Lost Soldier Creek. Over the years, Doug and Jackey raised reputation cattle, as well as raising wheat, oats, and barley. In his own words, Doug loved nothing more than to plant a kernel of grain and watch it sprout and grow until ready for harvest. Doug and Jackey made their home together until her passing in 1994.
On May 5th, 1995, Doug and Delores Steiner were married in Miles City, MT and in 1999, Doug sold the family ranch, moved to the Powder River and enjoyed farming and haying with water finally under his control. In 2005, Delores and Doug moved to Miles City, where Doug continued to hay and farm irrigated land, both in Miles City and on a small farm near Rosebud.
Doug is survived by his wife, Delores, son Doug (Jan), grandchildren, Jared (Kristine), Jennifer (Kevin) Miller, stepsons Bowen (Sherri) Steiner, Cody Steiner, Tyler (Christy) Steiner, step granddaughter Reagan (Judd) Bennett, great grandchildren Emma Miller, Cole Gaskill, Charlie Miller, Jackson Gaskill, Austin Steiner, Colby Steiner, Grant Steiner, and Max and Melanie Bennett, and sister-in-law, Karen Gaskill.
Doug is preceded in death by wife Jackey Gaskill, grandson Jay Gaskill, daughter-in-law Elisa Gaskill, and brother Dallas Gaskill.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

I remember Doug when he and Jackie were on the Daniels Place and our neighbor. I admired Doug and his approach to life and the way he seemed to include us “Himelspach kids” in the conversation and talked to us as adults. Doug and Jackie were a wonderful role model for us. Doug was a wonderful man, rancher, farmer and contributed greatly to the Powder River County Community. My condolences got out to Dougie, as we knew him.
