Upon graduation, he worked with his father driving a four horse Fresno building roads and dams. Starting in January of 1943, he worked for five years at the Keeline Ranch as a ranch hand. In the fall of 1948, Bud and his brother, Darrell, leased the T7 and Raitt Ranch and were in the sheep and cattle business. Bud had his first job lambing at age eleven and worked during lambing season every spring until he moved to Fortification in 1956.Bud married Amie Floyd on June 17, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church in Gillette, Wyoming. They moved to the Fortification ranch west of Gillette in 1956 into the old Roy Montgomery ranch house where Bud and Amie still reside. They didn't have running water or electricity, but acquired a telephone in December of 1958. In 1966, Bud and Amie purchased part of the Fortification ranch from Dent and Oran Floyd. A rural school started at the ranch in 1961. Troy, Kerry and Lora were the only students most of the time and Amie taught them for three years. Later they attended the schools in Gillette. Electricity was run to the ranch in 1966 and the roads were graveled in 1967. The couple began taking in hunters in 1957, first for the need of extra income and still today for the old friendships which have lasted over thirty years. Elk, deer and antelope are all hunted on the ranch. In 1973, the couple purchased the rest of the ranch from Dent and Oran, who retired and moved to Gillette. In 1984, they bought a house in Gillette, but Bud was still active on the ranch with his sons and grandsons. Bud was on the Advisory Board of the First Interstate Bank and also on the Board of Directors of the St. Onges Livestock Auction, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, Wyoming Stockgrowers and the Farm Bureau. He attended the Presbyterian Church of Gillette. Bud enjoyed being on the ranch, visiting with neighbors, being with his family, and especially being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed attending many sporting events to watch his children and grandchildren participate in football, basketball, track and rodeo. He loved to watch the grandchildren at whatever they were doing.
