Duane Mathison, age 81, of Miles City.

October 5, 1935 – July 10, 2017

Duane Keith Mathison, age 81, of Miles City, Montana died in Miles City on July 10, 2017 at his home.

He was born on October 5, 1935 in New Deal, Montana to Carl and Lillian Mathison. He was raised in Kinsey, Montana attending Kinsey School and Custer County High School, graduating in 1954.  After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea.  Duane was married to Carolyn Jablonski on October 29, 1960.  They resided at Becker Lane and later moved to Kinsey.  They were blessed with four children.

Farming was his life and he was outstanding in his field of agriculture, being recognized as MT Farmer of the Year in 1973 along with many best corn grower awards. He was an extremely hard worker and ran his meticulous farm with precision.

He and Carolyn raised their family in the traditional way. Religion was very prevalent in which he led his life accordingly, he truly was a man of God and served Him in his everyday life. He enjoyed watching all his children in their sporting days and always made it a priority to attend all events…. even in the middle of irrigating season.

Duane enjoyed playing racquetball, tennis, golf and cards with a healthy sense of competition. He was involved in many organizations throughout his life and was a big part of assisting his children through their 4-H days.  There were many good memories at the Miles City Fair with runaway steers and spending the money made from selling sweet corn.  After the kids left he spent many years serving as a Custer County Commissioner.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, brother Delbert, sister Elaine and son Mark Mathison.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn of 57 years. His son Craig and wife Stacy with their children, Mark, Rylee and Luke.  His daughter Andrea and her children Hayes and Jenner.  His daughter Rachel Gundlach and husband Mitch with their children Gavin, Gabe and Grace.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Grace Bible Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Bible Church.  Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery.  Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting:  www.stevensonandsons.com.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

I remember Duane plauing on my dads baseball team and so many fond memories of those days and now I am sure he is playing on Dsds team agsin in heaven. He is probably playing with Bob and Freddie on his team and yhey are winning. You were such a great family man with a wonderful wife and so supportive of your children and grand children. Aunt Tut, Craig, Andrea, Rachel and all…the Miller kids have great memories of Uncle Duane including plugging our noses as we toured the silage bank, swimmin’ the irrigation ditches and being devoured by the Montana State Bird while picking sweet corn.   49. I have so many memories of Uncle Duane and the times I spent at the farm growing up. Always the jokester, he lit up a room with that smile and laugh. He was passionate in everything he did and believed in. His family and community will miss him dearly. He always had a smile on his face and liked to get a laugh out of everyone and was always open with his friendship. I did not see him as much once we moved from Kinsey, but whenever I did see him we always had a great few minutes visiting. He was a neat guy and will be missed by all.

  57. Larry and I feel so blessed to have had Duane and Toot as our neighbors. We raised our kids together and they were like brothers and sisters. There are so many great memories that will never be forgotten. Our love and prayers are with the family.

  58. Duane and I were classmates at CCHS and teammates on the track team that won the 1954 Class A state championship. I believe Duane and John Frey (bkb) were the first Kinsey athletes on CCHS teams. Alwas a smiler!

  62. My heart goes out to Duane’s family. I saw him and wife Carolyn at my aunt Betty Fandrich’s funeral a few years back. It was good to see them after so many years. He was a great neighbor to us at Kinsey as well as a good friend to my parents, Carl and Bunny Wohlgenant. His fields above our house provides many great bike rides for my sister Denise and I.

  64. Toot and family be blessed. Duane was such a good friend when we were young. Could always count on at least one good dance with him. You as a family were always so special to my mother, especially during beet harvest. What a special man he was to all.4
