Earline Pettigrew, 88, longtime resident of Miles City, died peacefully in her home on June 3, 2019. She was born Earline A. Thompson on October 16, 1930 in Shelby, Montana, daughter of Earl and Thiel Thompson.
Earline grew up north of Shelby and graduated from Sunburst High School. On October 20, 1951 she was united in marriage to Tom Pettigrew in Shelby. Together they ran restaurants in Shelby and Forsyth before moving to Miles City and opening the Airport Inn in 1963.
Earline was the last surviving member of the Thompson family, preceded in death by her parents and 5 siblings. As a strong Christian and member of Trinity Lutheran Church she faithfully got her family of 5 to church regularly. She was a busy mother who kept track of all of her kids while also assisting Tom with the daily operation of the Airport Inn. A mother to all of the children in the neighborhood, she was always willing to feed any extras that appeared for dinner. Throughout the years she enjoyed playing bridge with family and friends and socializing with her many friends at the Town and Country Club.
She was survived by Pete Pettigrew (Sharon) of Alexandria, VA, Peggy Hill of Miles City, Parker Pettigrew of The Woodlands, TX and Pam Pettigrew of Glendive, daughter-in-law Mary Pettigrew, 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild as well as very special friend and longtime employee Martha Crandall and longtime friend Janet Klein.
Earline was preceded in death by husband, Tom Pettigrew, daughter Polly, and son Sam, her parents and 5 siblings.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 as on Monday, June 10, 2019 at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Howard Schreibeis will officiate. Cremation will follow. Burial will be at a later date. Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Should friends desire, memorial may be made to Wake Up and Lace Up or to the charity of your choice.

I’m so happy I was able to count Earline among my neighbors and friends in Miles City. We loved chatting with her whenever she waved to us from the door and bringing her treats from our garden and visits from the kids, whom she loved to fawn over. I once brought her some garden things and she surprised us with delivery of a pizza soon after. Mike, who is a greater fan of pizza than garden vegetables, has since always asked me to be sure and plant some of those pizza plants every time I start planning my garden. She was a special lady and my condolences go out to the entire family. She will be missed by many

Janet Klein says
Another special lady has left our community and her legacy will continue with the daily operations of the Airport Inn. Tom and Earline were were a very special couple who came into my family’s life and it has brought continued friendships for me. I was very honored to be “adopted” into the family when I started babysitting when it was needed. My mom ironed for the family, as Tom’s white shirts and the rest of the family’s clothing had to be ironed perfectly every week. My mom would find buttons missing or hems or seams coming out and I got to repair those…this starting my love of sewing that has continued to this day. As Earline grew older, Peggy and I’s friendship has deepened and I had the privilege of helping Peg with her mom. I feel so honored to be a part of this wonderful family with the gatherings and feeling being a part of a family. Earline, you prayed so very hard to our Heavenly father to be reunited with Tom and now your prayers have been answered. Please know you were like another “mom” to me and you will be missed so very much…enjoy your chocolate, your milk shakes and chocolate chip cookies in abundance now. I love you little lady!!

Dear Peggy, Pete, Parker and Pam –
Lots of great memories of times spent at The Airport Inn, as well as the T&C. Dad and Tommy were wonderful and close friends. I remember when my Dad took me up to The Airport Inn, when Tom was building it (the first one), and I worked there in the winter of 1973. What a trip! Tom loved the business so much, and his girl, Earline was one-of-a-kind! We never made a trip back to Miles City, but what we didn’t stop up for a meal or two! Miss that. Blessings upon you as you make the awful journey through this loss. Our sympathies are with you, and you have our love, too. Godspeed.
Mary Snell says

Pettigrew Family:
Sometimes it feels like people or places are part of one’s life family, even if not related by blood. That’s how Lucy and I feel about the Pettigrew family and the Airport Inn. We very much enjoyed their friendship and experience at Airport Inn. Earline leaves a great legacy of her family and contribution to Miles City. Best wishes to all.
Sandi Updyke says

May your wonderful memories get you through, and know that Earline is watching from above with so many of her friends.
Terri L Brockel says
In each of our lives, there are a few rare people who cross paths with us and leave an indelible impression. For me, your Mother was one of those rare souls. I fondly recall babysitting Pete, Peggy, Sam, and Parker when you lived in Forsyth. Your Mom was the original “Force of Nature”, deftly handling anything and everything. I especially remember her kindness, her humor, her zest for life, always with a smile. My thoughts are with you as you honor her life.
Terri Brockel, Portland, OR
Judy Richardson Bovee says
I can’t think of another woman in Miles City that so many kids called “mom.” I was one of those kids. I met Peggy when the family moved to Miles City. We were in the third grade together at Washington School. From the first moment I walked into their home, I felt the warmth and love of the Pettigrew family. I can’t count how many meals I shared with them in their home and at the Airport Inn. Yes, I could feel kindness and love in their family home, but as I look back on those formative years of my life, I now know what made me feel so secure, was the firm discipline, work ethics and religious values that Tom and Earline instilled in all of us. I will always cherish Pete, Peggy, Sam, Parker and Pam. I am not their sister in blood, but will always be their sister in my heart.
Jeri Holter Lester says
Words seem inadequate to express the sorrow felt by the loss of Earline. May you have comfort in knowing that someone SO special will never be forgotten. The love for your family (and for the Airport Inn) is so widespread it is almost hard to fathom. Please know that I am thinking of you and my heart is with you all!!
Jackie Duncan Zawada says
My condolences to the Pettigrew family, Earline, Tom & family were such a big part of our family growing up. I have such fond memories of all our gatherings & trips together! May she rest in peace.

I am saddened to hear this. Earline was a lovely lady. I didn’t know her well, but as the “little sister tag-a-long” with Parker and Cal during my junior high and high school years, times spent at the Airport Inn and being included in a few of the private events there are included in some of my best memories. I know she will be greatly missed by her friends and family on earth and gladly welcomed by Tom and the hosts in heaven.
JAMES T ATKINSON says
Met Tom and Earline through my employment by the Elmore’s. Your mom and dad were good to me. Earline was a special lady. Loved going to the Inn even after I left M. C. Thoughts and prayers to Earline’s family.
