In Memory Of

Ed Mayberry, age 90, of Miles City

September 28, 1934 – November 24, 2024

Edwin L. “Buck” Mayberry, age 90, passed away on November 24, 2024 at the VA Community Living Center.

Ed was born September 28, 1934 in Philip, South Dakota to Charles and Marian (Weber) Mayberry. He graduated high school from Rapid City Central in 1953. During his senior year he took up boxing. He became the West River Golden Glove Champion and second in the State of South Dakota. He later joined the United States Marine Corp. Upon his discharge, he continued his education and received his master’s degree in mathematics. He got his first teaching/coaching job at Buffalo, South Dakota. It was there he met and later married Dorothy Oja on January 30, 1960. To this union, four children were added, Zelda, Corina, Shane and Terri. Later, after years of fostering numerous children, Aiden was added to the family. They made Miles City their home. Ed had a very full life. He taught at Miles Community College for several decades. He refereed football, basketball, and wrestling. He was instrumental in starting the wrestling and rodeo programs at MCC. He coached wrestling for 7 years. He then went on to become the Miles Community College rodeo coach for 25 plus years. In which time he had many national qualifiers. He was also selected as a Big Sky Rodeo Director. During the summers, starting in 1963, he went to work for the Bureau of Land Management as a fire fighter. He continued working summers for 56 years and was the oldest active fire fighter. He earned the nickname “Straight Ahead Ed” and “Bucky Full Speed”.

Ed loved hunting and fishing and was still talking about it at the time of his passing. He passed his love of hunting and fishing onto his sons and grandsons. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Miles Community College and was Grand Marshall of the Bucking Horse Parade. Ed was on the Miles City School board for several years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Range Riders. He volunteered at Holy Rosary Hospital and Range Riders. He looked forward to working the tournaments in town by taking tickets or running the hospitality room. He participated in the Big Sky State Games and won several medals. He enriched many lives playing Santa and Smokey Bear. He was an avid Green Bay Packers Fan.

Ed is survived by his wife Dorothy of 64 years, daughters: Zelda Stairs (Kent Koester), Corina (Wade) Berry, Terri (Bret) Bowen, and sons: Shane and Aiden; grandkids: Wayne Berry, Ace (Carrie) Berry, Trista (Ty) Manke, Amy Bender, Shay (Teddi) Bender, Raven (Ty) Spencer, Mason Mayberry and 4 bonus grandsons: Jacob Harrington, Kash, Kane and Keaton Rosenbalm and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Del Sexton; brothers-in-law: Larry (Cathy) Oja and Randy Gilbert; several nieces and nephews, cousins and his extended VA family.

Mayberry family! What a guy! He was always busy, but that smile he held – it was worth the world in gold! I first met Ed when I got to come along for the ride to Miles City with my brother (Delbert) to check the college out. Ed became my brother (Delbert’s) rodeo coach at Miles Community College that day! (Scary thought that Ed and Delbert have reunited in heaven again! Lol!). Than a few years later – it was my turn for college and Ed became my college math teacher. As I began my career at the BLM – it was Ed that I came across once again. We worked together in the fire world for several years. Ed was always helpful and willing to lend a hand doing anything. He absolutely had a love for kids! As Ed retired from the BLM – (Ha! Ha! He never slowed down or REALLY retired from ANYTHING) – I still ran into him taking kids to football practices or he would be helping serve some beers at beer booth. He was definitely an asset to our community of all his talents. I will miss the ” Hi kid! How are ya?” Those visits were always a joy and delight with that smile he wore. I was so lucky to call him a friend as many others. Ed- I hope that arena in heaven holds powerful horses and Cowboys to be coached. Rest Easy Ed! ❤🙏

Dorothy, Zelda, Corina, Shane, Terri and Aiden,
I have known Ed, it seems, all my life. Some called him straight ahead Ed, I called him ADD Ed or the best neighbor anyone could possibly have. If I was out working in my yard he would come out and lend a hand whenever and whatever the weather. Jodi and I adored being Ed and Dorthy’s neighbors.
I watched Ed fall off of a ladder at the peak of his house. He landed on his back, got up and shook- it- off like a bull rider and went back to work. Thank God I watered the yard there before he hit the ground- he landed on it like a trampoline and bounced six foot back into the air landing on his feet. Yes, Ed does bounce.

Saddens me to see this. Ed was by far my favorite teacher at MCC. I majored in Math so had lots of contact with him during my two years there – seems like he was always smiling & joking. I too have been a huge Packer fan all my life. Thoughts & prayers go out to his family.

My most sincere condolences go out to the Mayberry family. Ed was a neat man! I loved working summers with him fighting fires for BLM. I always felt he kept a watchful eye on me. He always had a smile on his face, a hug to give, and something to chuckle about. The man had more energy than any of us who were almost half his age. He worked his ass off and never complained about it. His work ethic, great attitude, kind heart, and spunk were truly inspiring. You will be missed by many, straight ahead Ed.

Thank you for sharing your light with us, Ed. The influence you’ve had in our neighborhood and community is indeed such a bright one!

We were very sad to hear of Ed’s passing. He was one of the first people who worked at MCC that I met when I started my teaching career. My first year teaching in Miles City I had half day classes at the high school and in the late afternoon the MCC students would come to the high school for the automotive tech classes. Ed would show up several times a week to check on the progress of his wrestlers who were enrolled in the class. The next year I went to work full time at MCC and my friendship with Ed blossomed. He and his family became an important of our family’s life. Memories of hunting trips to construction projects; often with varied outcomes are precious.
Ed was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. His smile and enthusiasm brought sunshine into every situation. He was truly a great person and a legend in Miles City who will be greatly missed but not forgotten. RIP my friend.

    Ed’s Families,
Sorry to hear this. Met him when he was Rodeo Coach and was at Looman’s Arena.
Mid seventies and he worked his tail off out there taking care of the kids and the
stock. Not many like him left anymore.
Always a smile and would like to visit. RIP Ed

Our condolences to the Mayberry family. Ed had a lasting impact on Diggers life as both Rodeo Coach and math teacher. We wouldn’t be where we are now without mentors like Ed. He always encouraged his Rodeo team members to finish what they started especially their educations.

I worked with Ed at MCC . It is probably an understatement to say that Ed had a big personality and a heart to match. I echo other’s sentiments that Ed was not only willing to help but was enthusiastically wanting to help. I remember he was famous for helping people with household moves and was known for his speed in those endeavors. He got things done! I know he loved his students at MCC. He leaves a wonderful legacy. Our condolences to his family.

I first met Ed when I was a student at MCC, then I worked with Ed when I started teaching at MCC. Great guy that always gave everthing he had in any endevor he took on. He would come over to teach math to the vocational students on his prep time. He touched numerous lives in eastern Montana in and out of the classroom. MC is a wonderful place and it was made better because of Ed and his family. Ed was always on the move and never seemd to stop moving.. He was always busy helping someone or doing some project for the school or the community. Ed you are a great guy that always gave more of yourself than anyone could expect. Thanks for being my friend for all of those years, you will be missed.
