Edna Bruce, age 97, of Broadus formerly of Boyes, MT, passed away April 16, 2004 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus, MT.

One of nine children of Scandinavian parents, John and Evelyn (Aladals) Vaara, Edna was born November 4, 1906 in Lead, South Dakota. With a team and wagon the family moved from Lead when she was 9 years old to homestead near Boyes, Montana. She finished the 8th grade at the Osgood School. She went to Denver for business school and worked for her board and room. She was called home after the death of her father to help.

Edna and Chester Bruce were united in marriage November 8, 1923 in Broadus. To this union, three children were born, Norman, Jimmie and Barbara. Eventually the two brothers; Paul and Chester joined forces, with Paul running the Bruce Mercantile and Chester operating the ranch.

Edna worked side-by-side with Chester in their ranching and farming until Chester passed away in 1963. With son Norman she continued with her work. Edna loved horses, gardening, crocheting, cooking, reading magazines, newspapers, poetry and books on famous people. The birds big and small were observed with pleasure. Many arrowheads were found in her numerous walks. Her numerous grand and great grandchildren found a conversationalist and friend when they were with Edna. She resided at her ranch until 2002 when she entered the Powder River Manor. Edna was a member of the Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary.

Edna is survived by her son, Norman and wife Lula May (Embrey), of Broadus, her daughter, Barbara and husband Frank Rosencranz, of Broadus, her grandchildren; Anna May and husband Kay VanDyke, of Roundup, Darla and husband Ernie Reaves of Boyes, Chester Bruce and wife Pam (Pettibone) of Belle Creek, Terrie and husband Mike Freese of Belgrade, Jimmie Davis and special friend Terri Terzo of Belle Fourche, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Edna was preceded in death by her son Jimmie, husband Chester, sisters; Sadie Dunaway, Mamie Weber, Hazel Vaara, Julie Bruce, Hilma Bruce and brothers Walter, George and Ronald Vaara.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus.
