In Memory Of

Edna Slagel

Visitation: Sunday, May 10, 2009 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.

Funeral services: Monday, May 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City.

Interment: Custer County Cemetery.

Edna Emelia Slagel, age 100, of Miles City, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at the Friendship Care Villa in Miles City.

Edna was born March 8, 1909 in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Anna Feininger (nee Mueller). She went to parochial school first though sixth grade in Boone, Iowa and attended seventh and eighth grade in St. Paul, MN where she lived with her grandmother. Edna helped with chores which included carrying water and keeping a coal stove filled. Edna then moved to Wheaton, MN where the family lived on a farm and she graduated from high school.

Edna married Arthur Gerald Slagel in Wheaton, MN July 18, 1930. Daughter LaVonne was born in Breckenridge, MN in 1931. The family then moved to Glendive, MT where son, Donald Leroy, was born in 1934. Art worked for Midland Lumber, Co. In 1935 the family moved to Fairview, MT, then to Baker, MT., and lastly to Sidney, MT. where Art retired in 1971. During these years Edna would work as a secretary at the lumber yard and two different garages.

Edna played the pump organ at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Fairview when her children were very young. She was very active in her church, belonging to Ladies Aide, and working in the church office. Edna was the first Secretary of L WML of State, Lutheran Women's Missionary League. While in Sidney, Edna went with the pastor to visit the rest home and hospital playing the piano for residents. She did this until she was ninety. In October of 2002, Edna moved to Miles City to be closer to her daughter. She lived at Friendship Villa for the last three years. She loved her room and the staff. Edna enjoyed playing Pinochle and other games right up to her 100th birthday.

Edna is survived by her daughter, LaVonne (Kermit) Ulrich of Miles City, MT, son, Donald Leroy Slagel of Ann Arbor, MI, eight grandchildren: Kathy (Jerry) Jackson of Federal Way, WA, Bob (Chris) Ulrich of Billings, MT, Dave ( Marlene) Ulrich of Spanaway, WA, Loree (Shannon) Jelfers of Garrison, ND, Rick (Patti) Slagel of Marshall, MN, Mike ( Teresa) Slagel of Marshall, MN, Deborah (Steve) Larson of Tracy, MN, and Shari (Raz) Patel of Spain; and eight great-grandchildren.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband Art in 1982, her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 10, 2009 from 1 to 6p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 11, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, Miles City, with Pastor Schreibeis officiating. Lunch will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial follow on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, MT.
