Obituary for Edward Emil Stein
Edward Emil Stein Sr. (Eddie) was born April 17, 1926 in Alcova, Wyoming. He passed away early morning Sunday December 20, 2020 in his home surrounded by his family.
Eddie is survived by his wife Mary Jo and seven children; Ed Stein Jr (Kay and their two boys Andrew and Chris, his wife Tessa and great granddaughter Emerson) of Stevensville, MT, Bob Stein of Mountain Home, AR, Kathy Gamble (John) of Miles City, MT, Mike Stein of Belgrade, MT, Cindy Compton (Scott and their daughter Jennifer) of Tucson, AZ, Patty Conner (Tim) of Sandy, UT, Connie Starkey (Tim and their two children, Trenton and Taylor) of Great Falls, MT. His niece Kim, nephews Alan, Craig, and Blake Wiland and Dan Lowney. He is proceeded in death by his first born Daniel Stein in 2016, his sister Elta and brother in-law Dave Wiland, brother in-law and sister in-law Con and Sharon Lowney.
Eddie was educated in Miles City, MT and joined the US Army during WWII prior to his senior year at Custer County High School. He served in the Fighting 69th Army Infantry division stationed in England, France and Germany as they approached the final conflict, the Battle of the Bulge that ended WWII in Europe. He was the driver for senior officers moving around the battle lines until the war ended and served the rest of his time with an ordinance evac company to dispose of the damaged tanks. He then served in the Montana National Guard. We are proud of Ed’s service to our country.
When he was discharged in August of 1946, he returned to his hometown of Miles City, MT. He met Mary Jo Lowney from Butte, MT who was in nurses training. They married July 2, 1951, the beginning of 69 years together. Eddie was a skilled mechanic, working for Love Motors for 18 years and Beacon Carter for 30 years. He retired in 1991. His favorite activity was fishing, which he did frequently. He also like woodworking, gardening, was an avid bowler and enjoyed reading history and war novels and watching Atlanta Braves baseball. He and Mary Jo traveled to visit their children and grandchildren in various cities, Hawaii, cruises to Alaska, Caribbean and the Panama Canal in his retirement years.

Ship and Mary and myself all loved Eddie Stein. He worked for the Beacon for thirty (30) years, and, he was as much, “family”, as any of the several hundred wonderful persons who worked there in the 37 years Mom and Dad owned it and operated it.
When I arrive in Heaven for all eternity, Eddie will shake hands with me like his good habit, “Robbie, how are you today?”
All my love, Rob Shipley
