Edwin Moos was born May 3, 1917, the second of eight children of Henry and Lydia (Knopp) Moos. The family lived in the Watkins Community south of Brockway, Montana. He passed away at McCone County Nursing Home on December 5, 2013.
Edwin began school at the Parks’ home and then went to the Gackle School 1 mile east of his home after that schoolhouse was built. The little school was moved about 1 ½ miles north of their farm and Edwin studied there until he went to Brockway High School. He was a serious student and worked at the dormitory to help pay his way in school. He graduated from Brockway High School in 1935. Education was very important to Edwin and while there was no opportunity for higher education for him, he made sure that his children did have that opportunity. As a young man Edwin worked for area farmers and ranchers until he could begin to farm on his own.
He married Ida Naasz from the Little Dry area of Prairie County on May 23, 1940. The couple moved to their farm 12 miles west of Circle and began their 69 years together with love and hard work. Their “home place” began with a 1928 steel-wheeled Twin Cities tractor, a 10 foot drill, a 3-bottom plow and a used McCormick pull tractor. The original farm consisted of 1 section of deeded land and ½ section of leased land. He purchased his original land for $4.00 an acre and seeded 150 acres of spring wheat. They had about 10 cows, a few pigs and some chickens. They lost their first child Orvin Lee. Doline, Don, Janice and Eldon completed their family. As years went by they raised their children and expanded their farm. Edwin was the foreman when the Congregational Church was built in Brockway. He was an original member when the Congregational Church was built in Circle; that same building is now the Stevenson mortuary. He built his own home in 1953. It didn’t matter what it was – a pocket watch when he was a kid, a gas engine of his mother’s washing machine or the plan and construction of his house – he could take things apart and figure out how to put them together to work perfectly. He was quick to get new things; electricity, running water, indoor plumbing, TV and farm equipment so his family always had new conveniences and the best he could provide. He was a respected County Commissioner from 1966 to 1984. He was a member of the TV Booster Club and the McCone County Museum Board.
He loved music and had a natural talent with the mouth organ, button accordion, piano, organ and guitar. This love and talent was passed to his daughter Janice and son Eldon. Doline and Don learned his love of the land and both farm today; Doline on the farm where Edwin grew up and Don on the farm that Edwin started as a young man. Edwin was a much loved big brother because he always took time to play board games or cards with his siblings. He taught his kids to play cards and love the games. Pinochle was the favorite but they all liked Whist, Canasta, Poker and any game that could be dealt. Cards and coffee with good friends were his lifelong enjoyments.
Fishing was his recreation and his thinking and talking time. Going fishing was the time he passed on history and stories to his kids and grandkids. He also worked out plans to expand his farm, sell his cows, build new things and fix old things while he was fishing. He wasn’t an impulsive man, he made well thought out decisions. He was responsible, stable, respected, admired and loved. In a life of 96 years, those are great accomplishments.
Edwin and Ida moved into Circle in 2003 and Ida passed away in 2009. Edwin was a resident of McCone County Nursing Home since 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife Ida and his infant son, his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He is survived by his sister Ella Fredrickson of Sheridan, Wyoming, his sister-in-law Lillian Moos of Miles City, Montana, and Annette Kaul of Missoula, Montana, his children Doline (Earl) Fritz, Don (Nancy) Moos, Janice (Paul) Albert, Eldon (Dana) Moos, 8 grandchildren and their spouses, 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dear family of Edwin Moos – It seems that according to the information listed about Mr. Moos that he was loved and his life touched many people. Treasure the many beautiful memories left by Mr. Moos. Please be comforted by Bible promises at this difficult time. Be assured that it was not a part of the Creator’s purpose that people suffer and die. Everything made by God was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Suffering and death was introduced by Adam’s disobedience and passed on to all mankind (Romans 5:12). There will soon come a time when the dead are resurrected (John 5:28, 29) and death will be no more (Revelation 21:3, 4). Hopefully these Bible promises will ease the pain of this loss.and you are comforted by Bible promises of a hopeful future (John 17:3).
