Ella Mae (Morehouse) Martin, 86, died Saturday, October 19, 2003, in the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer, South Dakota. She was born October 15, 1917, on the
homestead south of Little Sheep Mountain, the daughter of Jesse and Flossie
Butler Morehouse.
The family moved to a farm on Cherry Creek, only about 30 miles north of Terry, in 1921. There the children went to the new South Fork School. Jesse returned to Bristol, South Dakota in December 1924. The Family, mother and five younger children, moved to Terry in August 1927. Ella was in the fourth grade with Mrs. Plath, teacher. Ella graduated from Terry High School in 1936. She worked for Vivian and Jimmy Young while in high school, then in the cafe after graduating. She married Arthur O. Martin on June 26, 1939. They had four children Zane, Sharon, Jeanne and Jill.
Ella is survived by her sisters, Florence Lussenden of Choteau, MT; and Peggy (Martinson) Inman (and Pud) of Ballentine, MT; daughters Sharon John of Hot Springs, SD; Jeanne Neumann of Fargo, ND; and Jill Behnke (husband Laurel) of Britton, SD; eight grandchildren: Kathleen (husband Alan Rogers Hot Springs, SD), Kelly John Casper, WY; Susan (husband Paul Schuster Minneapolis, MN); Martin Neumann Minneapolis, MN; and Tina (husband Aaron Kahre Britton, SD) Tami Behnke Aberdeen, SD; Erica Behnke Brookings, SD; and Becky Behnke Britton, SD; and four great grandchildren: Nicholas and Darci Rogers of Hot Springs, SD and Madeline and Zachary Schuster of Minneapolis, MN; and numerous cherished nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Maude, Alice, and Ruby; Brothers: Benny, Clarence and Billy; her husband Art and son Zane.
Ella weighed sugar beets at Benz for many years during their most productive years. Some of her more active community involvements were Zero Home Demonstration Club, Prairie County Farm Bureau, and Terry Senior Center. After Arts death from cancer in 1988 and having lived her entire 75 years in Prairie County, she moved to Hot Springs, SD where her granddaughter and husband Alan Rogers live.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Prairie County Cemetery in Terry.
