Elmer Robert Scheid, age 88 of Terry, passed away on February 17, 2015 at the Prairie County Hospital in Terry, MT.
Elmer was born in a sod house on the family farm north of Hazen, North Dakota on June 10, 1926 to Arthur F. Scheid and Hilda E. (Link) Scheid. He was baptized on June 22, 1926 at the Wolf Congregational Church in Kronthal, North Dakota. He was confirmed on June 16, 1940 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kronthal, North Dakota. As a child, he did numerous farming chores on the family farm as well as attending a small one room schoolhouse. He did clean-up work, such as removing trees, prior to the building of the Garrison Dam in 1947. Before being drafted for the Korean War in 1951, he worked on various farms around the Mercer County, North Dakota area. During his service to his country, he was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington and Fort Jackson in South Carolina before being shipped overseas to Japan and Korea. After being discharged in 1953, he returned to Mercer County where he worked for the Farmer’s Elevator as well as various farms in the area. In June 1957, he traveled to California, Washington, and eventually arrived in Terry, Montana in July where he searched for employment. He has made his home in Terry since then and eventually retired there. While in Terry, he was employed at various area farms and feed lots. He also worked 10 years at the Terry Elevator and 10 years as the custodian at Terry High School until his retirement. After retirement, Elmer enjoyed fishing, gardening, and has various odd jobs.
Elmer was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Fallon, Montana, the American Legion Club in Terry, Montana and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
Elmer is survived by his sisters Delores Bauer of Hazen, ND and Bernice Beick of Spokane WA. His brothers: Alvin Scheid of Hazen, ND and Reuben Scheid of Beulah, ND. His brother-in-law Lloyd Keidel of Mandan, ND. Numerous nieces and nephews: Karen Pavoni of Sun City, CA, Fred Scheid of Oceanside, CA, Pam Moyet of Sun City, CA, Connie Moran of Hayden, ID, Debra Holm and Dale Beick of Spokane, WA, Lori Fisher of Mandan, ND, Donna Sommer of Washburn, ND, Randy Winkler of Hermiston, OR, and Bruce Winkler of Hazen, ND. Elmer was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arthur and Hilda (Link) Scheid. Brothers: Clement Scheid and Leo Scheid. Sisters: Irene Scheid, Lillian Scheid, and Viola Keidel. Sister-in-laws: Berniece Scheid and Rose Coats. Brother-in-law: Arron Beick.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 1-6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry, MT.
