Elsie K. Zahn, 96, of Circle, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the McCone County Health Center in Circle, MT.
Elsie was born on December 31, 1916 to Arndt and Selma (Maier) Gebhardt in Monango, North Dakota. She attended country schools near Monango traveling by horse and buggy with her sisters Anna, Martha, and Hilda and brother Harold. In 1933 at the age of 16 she moved with her family to a farm north of Brockway. Soon after her arrival in Montana, Mom immediately went to work cleaning houses. She made a dollar a week and gave it to Granddad to help with family expenses. This began her lifetime of hard work.
She met and married Anton Zahn on February 7, 1941. They lived in Stevensville, Montana, Seattle, Washington, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. When Tony was drafted overseas during World War II Elsie and son Don moved back to Brockway to be closer to family. Elsie and Tony made their home west of Circle until Tony’s passing in 1970. She continued to run the farm until her death. Many folks remember Tony and Elsie from years of delivering mail on various routes. Elsie delivered mail from 1964 to 2009. She also served as a nurse’s aide at the McCone County Hospital for 30 years.
Elsie is survived by her son Don (Beryl) Zahn of Circle, daughter Barbara (Jack) Phillips of Missoula, and daughter Deb (Jeff) Porter of Circle. She is survived by three grandchildren, Tammi (Mike) Appis, Chad Morgan, and Tony (Laura) Morgan and five great grandchildren.
Elsie was a lifelong Christian. Her faith was demonstrated in her life by her love for family, friends, and neighbors. She was a wonderful homemaker, gardener, and you were always made welcome at her table.
Elsie was preceded in death by husband Tony in 1970, her sisters Anna, Martha, and Hilda and brother Harold.

My sincere condolences to the family of Elsie K. Zahn – May you find comfort in your loving memories, beautiful pictures and in recalling the many talents of Mrs. Zahn. The Bible book of Hebrews reminds us that God does not forget all of the love and fine works shown by his servants (Hebrews 6:10). Almighty God did not purpose that mankind suffer and die (Romans 5:12) . Our loving Creator has promised that a time will come when no one will face the prospect of pain and death because it will be eliminated (Revelation 21:4). The Paradise that was originally promised for the earth in the Garden of Eden will be fulfilled which will cause God’s “will being done as in Heaven also upon Earth” (Matt 6:9, 10). I hope that you are comforted by these Bible promises of a hopeful future (John 17:3).

Prayer of peace and comfort to the family. Elsie was a wonderful person and will be missed. Elsie was my grandmother’s (Martha) sister and I have many fond memories of Elsie. My Grandma and her would talk for hours on the phone and they were the best of friends. When my grandma passed 10 years ago, it felt like Elsie stepped into her place as my grandma and I am so glad that our family took the time to see her every time we visited. Much love to those hearts that ache her absence, please know she is in a good place. I can’t help but smile knowing Elsie is with her loved one’s in heaven and especially getting to see her beloved husband again…what a beautiful reunion that must of been!
