Emmett Stands In Timber
Vóhkóóhe Ȯhvovó’haestse (Spotted Rabbit) was named after Uncle Joe Tallbull Sr. Emmett quietly took his last breath on the morning of March 2nd at home alongside his loving wife Maybelline. He was just shy of his 87th birthday.
Emmett was born to Josie OneBear (Ridgewalker) and Tribal Historian John Stands In Timber in the spring of 1937, in a small canvas wall tent near Lame Deer. The youngest of his siblings, Emmett grew up on his grandparents’ allotment, near Busby, learning much from his grandfather, Ridgewalker. He loved horses and was an accomplished horseman. He attended Busby School and St. Labre, graduating in 1956.
Emmett was a member of the Kit Fox Society and had a deep respect for Cheyenne ways, taking part in traditional ceremonies and fasting. He knew society and sundance songs and enjoyed listening to both. He always stopped and made sure to pray at Bear Butte.
Emmett’s way of life included roaming the hills of the reservation, enjoying the beautiful views, he loved camping, and searching for big bucks, never missing the perfect rock or piece of wood for his crafts. Emmett made ceremonial pipes, red cedar lamps and furniture, ceramic art pieces, and burl wood planters. His perfectionism was renowned, and you can see the love he put into each of his art. He will be remembered sitting in his corner of his kitchen or outside meticulously stripping bark from pieces of wood, sanding pipestone, sharpening his knives or skinning deer.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Emmett loved adventure, much like those he enjoyed reading about in his western novels. Louis L’Amour and Will James are two of the many authors Emmett loved. Emmet loved watching western films, sporting events and The Carol Burnett Show. Lover of many sports, Emmett enjoyed basketball, rodeo, and women’s softball, but most of all football and the Denver Broncos were his team.
Emmett was a master tradesman in carpentry, skilled in all phases of construction. He worked construction in Montana, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Texas. You can see his handiwork all over the reservation. Although Emmett seldom attended church, he helped build many of the churches in the area.
Emmett was welcomed by those who preceded him in death; his father, John Stands In Timber, mother, Josie OneBear, Siblings: Burton, John Gilbert, Josephine, Elva, John Jr., adopted brothers Father Peter Powell and Ivan Small Sr., daughters Raquel and Angela, son, Maynard, grandson, Michael Ortega, and granddaughters, Natalie and Heather Jones and Jade Wagon.
Emmett is survived by his wife Maybelline Bigback, children Janelle (Brian) Timber-Jones, Eric (Brenda) Timber, Stella (Damson) Ortega, Thomas “Ivey” Timber, Misty (Kaitlin Pearce) Timber, Park (Sheri) Timber, Montague Bigback and Emmetts “Puppy Hound” Angus. His grandchildren, Jeremy (Heather) Burr, Loren (Bonnie) Burr, Danica (Ernest Grant) Burr, Dustin (Nicki) Jones, Erica Timber, Kristin (Jerry Metz) Timber, Erin (Dane Bullinsight) Timber, Kia Timber, Justin Blackwolf, Caroline Timber, Janelle LittleCoyote, Nora Tsosie, Dominic (Kristina) Ortega, Chloe (Paul Brennan) Ortega, Noah, Aaron and Nathan Timber, Jocelyn Golden, and Montague Bigback Jr., Mahala and Summer Vetch, Adrianna and Brianna Bigback, Lily Bush and Suzanne Limpy Greatgrandchildren: Esme, Ethan, and Everleigh Burr, Francine and Hattie Vincent, Hazel and Emmie Bullinsight, Amaya Shoulderblade, Michael, Damson, Stella, Carlos, and Aryanna Ortega. Ophelia Gene Golden, Hunter and Lilymae Timber, Raphael and Maeleah C’Hair.
Emmetts extended family includes, OneBear, Glenmore, Firecrow, Bearchum, Hiwalker, LittleWolf and RockRoad.
Emmett’s family extended beyond blood relations. Those that knew him as grandpa, uncle and brother are too many to name. He is loved and missed.
Our family is large, we apologize if we have left anyone out.

Sending prayers and condolences to all of Emmetts family and friends. As a child I remember going to Great Grandma Ridgewalkers log house to fetch her water from the pump. I remember her dirt floor being swept clean and a can full of apples and oranges next to her bed. She lived to be 100 years old and still able to live by herself. I also remember going to Grandma Josie’s home in Lame Deer and watching her bead for hours and listened to her stories. I bet Emmett had many of these stories he has told to his children and grandchildren. Keep these stories going as a tribute to your father he will smile from the camp on the other side and watch over all of you. He has joined our loved ones we lost throughout the years and as many have already mentioned we will see each other again. Many thoughts and prayers from our family(One Bear/WIlson) to yours. God bless all of you.
