Eugene Big Back, Sr., (Vohokas) Korean War Veteran, US Army; entered this world on May 7th, 1930 to John Big Back, and Nina Standing Elk Big Back, of Lame Deer Mt. Eugene’s grandfather was the fourth highest chief of the Northern Cheyenne, “Standing Elk.” Eugene worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Northern Cheyenne Agency for over 30 years, receiving commendation on numerous occasions for performance and time in service. Eugene was a respected elder in his community and society. He treasured his culture and spirituality, willing to share his knowledge throughout his lifetime to all who crossed his path, and whenever someone was in need he was always there.
Eugene entered the army on November 20, 1950 in Butte, MT and was a part of the BBTRY 11th AAA AW Battalion. Corporal Eugene Big Back Sr. was honorably discharged in November 1953 from the US Army. He was the last survivor of 16 young Cheyenne men who joined to serve in the Korean Conflict. He served overseas for 18 months.
He was the coach for Little League, Boy Scout leader and softball coach. Eugene coached hand games for the NHSC, (Nueta, Hidatsa, Sahnish College). they won the Hand Game Championship at AIHEC, (American Indian Higher Education Consortium). He was also a frequent hand game judge due to his hand game experience. He loved handgames. Eugene was also an avid outdoor sportsman; he loved hunting, camping, and pow wows. Patriots, Yankees and Rockets brought him hours of entertainment.
He loved all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Eugene lived a traditional, quiet life. He was a very humble man. Prayer was a part of his daily life. He loved his homeland. He once said he was born poor, and when he left this world he wanted a quiet, humble, journey home. With his cat by his side, Eugene embarked on his journey peacefully; in his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Eugene is survived by his wife Clarice of 38 years; son, Starr Baker Big Back, and grandson “Light;” sisters, Cecelia Big Back, Bertha Big Back both of Lame Deer, and Virginia Toews of Billings, MT. From Eugene’s first marriage to Gloria Red Neck are his sons, Eugene Big Back, Jr., Charles Big Back, Benno Big Back of Lame Deer; daughters, Eugenia Big Back Duhart of Busby, Mt. and Elisha Big Back, Portland, Ore.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents John and Nina Big Back, sisters, Ora June Big Back and Nancy Big Back, brother Steven Big Back and daughter Ora Louise Big Back Price.
Vohokas will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Until we see him again. We love you.
