Evelyn Chamberlin, age 94, of Brusett, Montana passed away on October 28, 2024 at the Garfield County Health Center surrounded by her family.
Evelyn was born on August 10, 1930, to Charles and Elsie (Loomis) Phipps at Hazney, Montana. Evelyn’s grandmother, Emma Loomis, a midwife, assisted in her birth.
Evelyn was the second of eight children. She grew up during the dirty 30’s and 40’s, attending rural school until entering Garfield County High School in 1944. Evelyn returned home at Christmas of her freshman year to help care for her siblings and grandparents. Evelyn later went on to get her G.E.D. On September 25, 1948, Evelyn married Curtis Chamberlin at her parents’ house in Brusett, Montana. Evelyn and Curtis started their life together on the Chamberlin Ranch, where they farmed and ranched until 1985, they then started a business in apartment rentals and later on started renting hunting cabins. She was a vital part in every aspect of their business. She loved to garden and always had a very large garden and beautiful flower beds. She crocheted many afghans, doilies, and was very artistic and painted many pictures. She loved rock hunting and found many artifacts; she collected coins and stamps as well. Evelyn shared with many of her grandchildren the joy and love for the same hobbies. She won many Grand Champion ribbons for her fair entries. Evelyn was the recipient of the 2022 Garfield County Fair Award. Her table was always full and open to anyone who would stop by, which was all the time, as she was an amazing cook, baker and conversationalist.
Evelyn was involved in community activities as a 4-H Leader, a member of the Blackfoot School Board, election board, Blackfoot Home Demonstration Club, and president of the Garfield County Health Center Residents Board. She was the definition of how hard work pays off. Evelyn and Curtis stayed on the ranch for 71 years, until moving into the Garfield County Health Center in 2019.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 76 years, Curtis Chamberlin, her children, Holly Negaard, Lyle Chamberlin (Tina), Pauline Chamberlin, Roger (Angie) Chamberlin; grandchildren: Kevin Negaard (Rachel), Celinda (Mike) Miller, Lisa (Chris) Bean, Greg (Aletha) Negaard, Naomi Negaard, Diana Barton, Nancy (Russ) Nehring, Kanyon (Jennifer) Chamberlin, Skye (Kate) Chamberlin, Rance (Jessie) Chamberlin, Justin Cornelius, Jordan (Rachel) Cornelius, Brian (John) Chamberlin, Dustin (Elizabeth) Chamberlin, Taylor (Jake) Chamberlin; 38 great grandchildren, 28 great-great grandchildren, a brother Curtis (Flossie) Phipps, sister, Mary (Bob) Cowin and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her brothers: Roy Phipps, David Phipps, Robert Phipps, Clinton Phipps, Frank Phipps, and a nephew James Phipps.

It was truly an honor to have met and visited with Mrs. Chamberlin during our times spent in Brusett. She made such an impression on me every time I sat with her and to my prodding, she would recall stories of her youth and her people. I remember once practically pleading with her to write her memories down for the generations to come and for folk such as myself that only experienced such things through movies and books. She said she did have a couple of pages somewhere – I sure hope she wrote more than that since! It did not take long to feel like I was returning to see family on our visits to Brusett. This is a testament to the sincerity and generous personality of Mrs. Chamberlin (and her family). There are many moments that are deeply seated in my memory…when we went into town together and visited the museum and stopping for lunch, a drive we took to see a friend of hers that I was unsure of meeting on my own (a funny story), me having no shame in mooching a couple of freshly baked cookies while visiting, or her laughing when I was hesitant to walk back to our cabin because the cows were milling about, to name a few. Certain people make a big impact on our lives – some for reasons that cannot be measured in one tangible event. Mrs. Chamberlin made an incredible impact on me – I thought her life was amazing (though she never thought it out of the ordinary). She embodied the words “grit” and “strength” and yet, was so kind and quick to share a smile, a cookie, or to make me laugh.
My heart goes out to all who are grieving the loss of this fine, great woman.

Dear Chamberlin family,
My sympathy for the loss of this kind, strong, beautiful matriarch of your family. She was such a wonderful woman and steadfast part of the Brusett community. Her cooking was unsurpassed. My grandpa & grandma Tripp thought the world of both Curtis & Evalyn. As did my folks. May God give you all peace and comfort.
Chrystee Carpenter says
Evelyn Phipps Chamberlin was a remarkable woman. She was intelligent, very capable, loved life, and loved her family. She had a wonderful sense of humor. I met Evelyn in 1987. My husband, John Graham, is Cutis’s nephew. We married in 1992. We live in Kansas, 1,100 miles away from the ranch. There were many years that we visited the Chamberlin’s twice a year. Evelyn welcomed us with open arms. I remember her large vegetable garden, her canning, and her incredible cooking. She grew beautiful hollyhocks on the side of the house. She enjoyed painting rural sceneries. She liked working cross-word puzzles and reading. Evelyn helped Curtis with ranching, cutting and branding calves. Again, Evelyn was remarkable. It was an honor to attend Curtis and Evelyn’s 50th and 75th wedding anniversaries. There was a time that the men got cross-ways with each other. I would call Evelyn and we talked in secret. Thankfully, the men made amends. My sincere condolenses to Curtis, Holly, Lyle, Pauline, Roger, and their families. I really loved Evelyn and I will always remember her!

MONTANA COSMOS
A Tribute to Evelyn Phipps Chamberlin.
Often we travel too fast, over our rolling prairies;
Spring time growing,
Summers’ gardens,
Harvests of fall.
Waters glisten great and small,
Wheat waves greetings to all.
Quiet grace, a wonderful place,
Forceful as the mountains splender,
Majestic as eagles soar.
Evelyn Phipps Chamberlin, a God sent blessing;
Twinkle of stars, light of the moon,
Dance shadows over the Whispering Pines.
She…oh, so sweet, our prairie flower.
In our prairie passing, let us share our love, again.
Radiant face, sparkle of eyes, beautiful smile;
Evelyn will be there always, Just for you!
John Graham
