Frances O’Shea passed away peacefully at the age of 83 at Holy Rosary Extended Care on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 with her son David and the caring nursing staff at her side.
Frances Glenetta Ramsay was born on November 10, 1937 in Miles City to James Glen Ramsay and Marion Frances Smith Ramsay. She was baptized at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Miles City and attended Washington School and Custer County High School, graduating in 1956. Her father ran Grant’s Cigar Store and Pool Hall. She later attended Eastern Montana College and Montana State College majoring in English and Business Education.
Fran taught at Glasgow High School for four years, where she met Calvin Florian, who was stationed at Glasgow AFB. They married in 1965 in Florida and then moved to Torrejon AFB in Spain, where Fran taught at the base school. In April of 1971, their son David was born. In October of 1971, Cal died of a heart attack. Fran and David remained in Spain until 1974
when they returned to Florida and Eglin AFB, where she worked as a secretary. On St. Patrick’s Day in 1974, Fran met Mike O’Shea at a Parents Without Partners party, and they married 4 months later. In 1976, Fran and Mike moved back to Miles City to be near Fran’s mother. They ran a successful business, O’Shea Appliance Center, for many years.
After David graduated from high school in 1989, Fran went back to college for Library Science. She was the head librarian for Forsyth Public Library until 1997, when she had her first stroke. She recovered from the stroke and was able to return to her favorite activities, including playing the organ and piano for Emmanuel Episcopal Church, quilting, and traveling.
She actively participated in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs on the local and state level for many years.
Fran suffered a second stroke in 2004, requiring Mike and Fran to celebrate their 30th Wedding Anniversary at Holy Rosary Hospital. Mike lovingly cared for her at home as long as he could, making sure she could still quilt and have her beloved poodle, Shadow. They joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 2007 and were a shining example of commitment and devotion.
When Mike was no longer able to care for Fran at home, he and Shadow visited her daily. Mike died in June 2019, a few weeks after they celebrated their 45th anniversary. David, Shadow, and Fran then spent many hours together.
Fran had a genuine, strong, and gentle disposition. She was loved by all who visited her and took care of her. She made the most of her limited circumstances and brightened everyone’s day.
Fran is preceded in death by her parents, James Glen and Marion Ramsay, her first husband Calvin A. Florian, and her second husband Michael T. O’Shea.
Fran is survived by sons, David Florian, Michael J. O’Shea, and Glen O’Shea, daughters Myra Florian, Debra Florian (Duus) and Ronda O’Shea. She has several grandchildren and great grandchildren with one great grandchild due in August.

Fran was gutsy gal, being a passenger in the car with me when I was learning to drive. During summer break from college you could sometimes find Fran at the “pool hall” behind the counter, and Sharon Venable and I would stop in for a visit during our lunch hour. She and Sharon can catch up on old times now. Rest in Peace friend.
