Gail Whitey Rhoads, age 82, of Miles City passed away on Friday, November 9, 2007 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Whitey was born in Anita, Iowa on March 13, 1925, the son of Frank and Ivadel (Lewis) Rhoads. He attended grade school and graduated from high school in Anita, Iowa and immediately following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served for three years and was in the Pacific Theatre aboard PT Boat. Following his discharge, he moved back to Iowa for a short time before moving to North Dakota with his father. He then went to work for the Tonn Ranch, Gilman Ranch, Doug Randall Ranch, and Jake Shumaker Ranch until 1967. He married Hazel Marie Alderman in 1950 in Miles City. In the 1960s, he started driving truck for Lantis Trucking, Murphy Trucking and several others in Miles City, retiring in 1991 but still he continued to drive the Miles City Sports Bus until early 2000.
Whitey was a fixture at all sporting events and knew every athlete in this area. Whiteys horse Cowboy and dog Turbo meant everything to him.
Whitey is survived by a son, Donie (Bobbi Jone's) Rhoads of Miles City, MT; a daughter, Marjorie Marj Rhoads of Miles City, MT; three sisters: Ann Tatum of Omaha, NE; Marjorie Mensing of Montevideo, MN; and Barb Ecklund of Albuquerque, NM; two grandsons: Dane and Torger Myran.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gayle Marie Rhoads in 1954. Visitation will be held on
Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 16, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post #1579.
