The family then moved to Marsh from Long Lake South Dakota when dad was 4. The family moved to Yakima Washington for a short period. While there, dad picked apples and cherries as a young child. The family then moved to Marsh, Montana. The family settled in Fallon Montana. During the summer dad would work with his uncle Adolph “Slim” helping with haying, milking, and any other jobs that needed to be done. He attended grade school in Fallon going on to attend High School in Terry Montana. Dad’s first job was at the Conoco gas station in Fallon. From there he went to work with his brother-in-law Marvin in the Pine Unit Oil Field. From Pine Unit, he went to work for the Beacon Carter station in Miles City. There he met the love of his life Jeannette Bickel. On June 9, 1957, they began their life together working for her parents Rose and Gideon Bickel. After retirement, during the winter months, they would go to Arizona for the winter helping at the Corner café for 10 years. In October of 2019, dad entered the Friendship Villa Care center where he resided until his passing. Garfield loved his grandchildren. He spoiled his grandchildren, Will, Denise, Nick, Duane, and Sarah with anything that they asked for. Dad enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He guided hunters on the farm while working there and made many friends through the years. His fishing trips included several trips to Alaska for King Salmon, catching a 78-pound Salmon. Dad bowled on a Monday night league for the Eagles club winning several trophies and attending the state bowling tournament. Dad enjoyed a good game of Pinochle, Cribbage, or Whist.
