On the morning of September 12, 2020, Garfield “Garf” Richard Fischer passed peacefully at Friendship Villa Care Center in Miles City of natural causes. dad was 84 years old at the time of his death.
Dad was born December 11,1935 in Long Lake South Dakota the oldest child of August and Anna (Ulrich) Fischer.
The family then moved to Marsh from Long Lake South Dakota when dad was 4. The family moved to Yakima Washington for a short period. While there, dad picked apples and cherries as a young child. The family then moved to Marsh, Montana. The family settled in Fallon Montana. During the summer dad would work with his uncle Adolph “Slim” helping with haying, milking, and any other jobs that needed to be done. He attended grade school in Fallon going on to attend High School in Terry Montana. Dad’s first job was at the Conoco gas station in Fallon. From there he went to work with his brother-in-law Marvin in the Pine Unit Oil Field. From Pine Unit, he went to work for the Beacon Carter station in Miles City. There he met the love of his life Jeannette Bickel. On June 9, 1957, they began their life together working for her parents Rose and Gideon Bickel. To this union 2 children were born Duane and Marlus. After leaving the farm in 1979, they moved to Billings for 1 year. Dad went to school at Billings Vo-Tech for air conditioning and refrigeration. After graduation from Billings Vo-Tech they returned to Miles City. During this time dad went to work for LP Anderson. In 1983 they moved to Shelby Montana where dad was employed by the SCS in Shelby. They stayed in Shelby until his retirement in 1997. They then moved to Terry Montana.
After retirement, during the winter months, they would go to Arizona for the winter helping at the Corner café for 10 years. In October of 2019, dad entered the Friendship Villa Care center where he resided until his passing. Garfield loved his grandchildren. He spoiled his grandchildren, Will, Denise, Nick, Duane, and Sarah with anything that they asked for. Dad enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He guided hunters on the farm while working there and made many friends through the years. His fishing trips included several trips to Alaska for King Salmon, catching a 78-pound Salmon. Dad bowled on a Monday night league for the Eagles club winning several trophies and attending the state bowling tournament. Dad enjoyed a good game of Pinochle, Cribbage, or Whist. When playing Pinochle, he would often discuss his hand with his opposing team player sitting beside him to see who had the better hand.
Garf is survived by his wife, Jeanette of Terry, one son, Duane (Mary) Fischer Sr. of Terry, one daughter, Marlus ( Denna) Amsden of Miles City, two brothers, Adolph Fischer of Fallon, Calvin (Eldora) Fischer of Fairfield, two sisters, Arilla Fischer of Fairfield, Deloris Hjorth of Gillette, WY, and 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents, August and Anna Fischer, one great grandson, Treyson Thompson two brothers, Leo Fischer, Melvin Fischer, and brother-in-law, Marvin Hjorth.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Interment will follow in the Prairie County Cemetery.
