George Leo Michels, 90, Miles City, died Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at Holy Rosary Extended Care Unit, Miles City.
George, the second son of Frank and Emma Michels, was born in Wibaux, Montana, July 20, 1924, during the period of the great depression. His parents homesteaded from Minnesota and Wisconsin.
George served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. After his discharge, he spent some time working on the family farm until he relocated his own family to Glendive, Montana. He loved the farm and always held a spot for it in his heart.
He was a master-electrician and master plumber and was self-employed. He had many different careers during his lifetime. He relocated his family to Illinois for a time. After a few years, he and his wife, Mary Ann, who was also his “Best Pal,” moved to Fairbanks, Alaska. While in Alaska, he worked as an electrician on the North Slope oil fields and pipeline.
George was a diehard Green Bay Packer fan. He enjoyed whistling and making homemade ice cream for family and friends. He was a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered by his family for his joke-telling and sense of humor. He also dearly loved all his grandchildren and the great-grandchildren and he would knock heads with them on occasion to let them know how he loved them.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Margaret (John) Shallow, son, Don (Julie) Michels, daughter, Georgia (Richard) Miller, and daughter Kathleen Michels, ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and “Best Pal” Mary Ann, his parents and four siblings.
Visitation will be Friday, April 17, from 2-5pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. My condolences to George’s family. I had the privledge to work with him and his sweet wife Mary Ann over a span of many years. They were both wonderful people and I enjoyed our visits. George was such a hard worker, even well into his 80’s. He will be surely missed!
