Funeral Service: 2 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2010 at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point, MT
George Francis Olson, age 86, was born February 28, 1924 at home on Sand Creek south of Wolf Point to John Elmer and Nadine (Cusker) Olson. He died December 1, 2010 at his home in Wolf Point, MT.
He attended the Coll School through the 8th grade then started high school via correspondence, but since it was a mild winter his interest drifted to breaking horses.In 1941, George (Salty), Harold Lien (Slim), and Wilbur Eggebrecht (Spats) rode their horses to the Miles City Rodeo. The morning they were breaking camp to come home, Paul Burt stopped by and offered them a job driving 1000 longhorn steers from Sunday Creek to the Big Dry. George worked for Paul about two months that summer.In November of 1942, George joined the Navy. After spending a number of months at various camps in California and receiving radar training, he then sailed to the Philippines landing at Cavite, the same place his grandfather Myra Cusker landed during the Spanish American War. He spent about two months on Corregidor Island. He arrived home New Years day in 1946.
He married Velma Trautman October 20, 1952 in Miles City. To this union were born three sons and a daughter. Velma passed away in 1987. On May 15, 1993 in Glasgow, MT he married Dorene Hegney, whom he met the summer before while she was doing a college internship in Wolf Point.Besides continuing to farm the home place he worked many years at Food Town and later worked for 19 years at the Sherman Inn having officially retired this past July. His childhood ambition was to become a preacher. After completing a Bible correspondence course he was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church on October 21, 1950 in Glendive, MT and was soon teaching and preaching. He took seriously the commission to go teach the Gospel truths and found it to be the most rewarding and fulfilling of all the work he ever did.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Henry; 2 sisters, Lillian Long and Helen Jamison; and a grandson, Randy Olson.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Nadine Olson of Bozeman, MT; sons, John Olson of Bozeman, Ernest Olson of Ithaca, NY, and Stephen (Karen) Olson of Greensboro, NC ; grandchildren, Dustin, Shawn, Kari, Aaron, Autum, Sierra; great granddaughter, Kadrie; brother Elmer (Mary) Olson; sisters, Emma Boysun, Myrtle Andres, Edna Schumacher, Alma Long; numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, December 6, with viewing one hour before the service at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Wolf Point.Condolences may be sent to the family atwww.stevensonandsons.com.
