Burial: will follow in the Forsyth Cemetery with full military honors
George Nicholas Schantz, age 85, of Forsyth, MT passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Rosebud Health Care Center in Forsyth.
George was born September 9, 1923 the son of Basil and Kathern (Schmidt) Schantz in Sunnyside, ND. He was raised in Mandan, ND with his twelve siblings and graduated from Mandan High in 1942. Following graduation, he entered the Navy where he was stationed in Hawaii and Guam during WWII. George received an honorable discharge as a Yeoman 2nd Class on May 23, 1946.
He was united in marriage to Hazel A. Johnson on March 26, 1953 in Forsyth, MT. Together they raised their children in Forsyth. During this time, George was employed with the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk and worked for them until his retirement. George was a member of the Catholic Church and also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed going hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Basil and Kathern; his twin daughters, Joyce and Judy; his brothers, Frank, Casper, twins James and John; his sisters, Barbara, Margaret, Rose, Clementina, twins Hennretta and Ann, and Dorothy. George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Schantz of Forsyth; his sons, Jay Schantz of Glendive, MT and Ron (Deanna) Schantz of Washington D.C.; his grandson Joey Schantz of Washington D.C.; and his sister Jean (George) Paul of Mandan, ND.
