In Memory Of

Gerald “Jerry” Rowland, of Ashland

July 9, 1954 – September 26, 2020

Gerald Lee Rowland, whom many new as “Jerry” was born July 9th 1954 in crow agency. His mother was Julia Bigheadman, and his 2 fathers were Donald F.S. Rowland Sr. and Joeseph Foote. Jerry grew up on the Northern Cheyenne reservation in the “camps” along the Tongue River. Located at what is now known as Ashland pow wow grounds. As a young child he enjoyed fishing, and hanging out by the river. While attending school at St. Labre he took up wrestling and had a knack for it. One year he ended up taking third in state. Later on, in his younger teenage years his love for horses blossomed. In his early 20’s he moved to Oregon with his older brother Donny. There he excelled in the agricultural trade. He worked for the Warm Springs Tribe, running the tribes ranch, agriculture, and horse departments. It is here at the young age of 21 that he was in an accident while training a horse. The result was a metal hip and limp for the rest of his life. However he “Never” let his disability stop him from doing what he loved. Eventually Jerry moved back home to Ashland. At this time he met Rosie Gray, whom would become his life partner. After getting established out on the property, jerry decided to be a foster parent. Him along with his companion adopted 2 children from Donna Rowland and raised them as his own. Jerry was a kind soul. He loved animals more than himself. He was proud of his way with horses. He was a very accomplished horseman, plumber, and mechanic. He tried to help everyone he could with little to nothing in return. His last days were spent out on the property surrounded by his animals where he was happy to be free again.
Jerry is survived by his two brothers, Donald Rowland jr and Cedric Rowland. His two grandkids Alahna and Shon Rowland.
