Gertrude Z. Martin, age 99 of Miles City, formerly of Helena, Montana, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Gertrude was born on November 2, 1906, the daughter of Brooks and Mary Elizabeth (Dawson) Carter in Salem, Arkansas. She moved with her family at the age of eight to just outside of Sturgis, South Dakota where she attended schools and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1928. Gertrude attended business college in Rapid City and then began working for MDU in Sturgis. On March 21, 1935 she was united in marriage to Sidney Martin. In 1942, they moved to California where Gertrude worked as a bookkeeper for the Defense Department during World War II. After the war ended, they moved back to South Dakota and in 1947 they moved to Helena, Montana and Gertrude started her career with the Montana Department of Fish and Game as an accountant. After twenty years, she retired andher and Sidney moved to Miles City to be closer to family and she has remained there ever since. Gertrude enjoyed hunting and fishing with her family and even showed up the men from time to time with her trophy game. She was also an avid bowler and a member of the Eastern Star.
Gertrude is survived by her son, Neil Martin and his wife Joellen of Miles City, MT, two grandchildren; Terri (Don) Stewart of Miles City, MT and Brett Martin of Burbank, CA, four grandchildren; Kara, Shea,Rafe, and Hannah, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in July of 1999, three sisters and one brother.
