“Skilled Gil.” I said, “what you gonna do today?” He said “well… …Dennis I’m going to take out this engine, rebuild it, when I get around to it. In the mean time I’ll put this engine in it.” I said “today” he said “well yeah.” In my defense I laughed, now you have too know Gil. to really understand what he did next. He looks at me and smiles, say nothing, but a smile. It was the summer after he graduated I think it’s been years, I believe it was a Scottsdale one ton truck a blue one I believe. I’ll be a monkey’s Uncle he comes driving up in his big blue Scottsdale with a smile of course. After that when ever it came to cars I never again second guessed him, about auto motives. I really enjoyed making him laugh, he liked to laugh. This one time I did something boneheaded… well that’s not true it all the time. Anyway it was blowing outside to beat hell, there was a long bow at uncle and aunties house. I load a arrow into this bow or notch an arrow… rise it up straight into the sky like a “bonehead”. I release, the arrow vanishes into the blue sky a moment passes… I Panic not because the arrow is going to come down and hit one of us, but because the wind has blow it down east way. I hear kids playing down that way, I scream “shit… oh God what did I just do!!” Well Gil again smiles and says “it’s fine.” He laughs and says “go down there you’ll find the arrow is next to the rusty old ford.” Again I’ll be a monkey’s uncle… no offense Kato. I go down there and low and behold the arrow is right where he said it was going to be. Wait I’m not finished, this other time were out shooting prairie dogs he liked to shoot prairie dog as did I. I think Bear (Terry) was with us, Gil had this 22 Magnum pistol long barrow, quite nice. After a long day of blood and guts, we made a mess of the prairie dogs, gee after Gil blows one to smithereens which mean pieces or bits. Gil says out loud “did you see that holy cow”. He laughs out loud, he also says and laughs out loud “what a shoot” I would agree, with “good shooting.” Gil was a good shoot with his rifle, what hunting with him a few times. Anyways on our way back there was the prairie dog right next to the road on a high bank, I stop the prairie dog is just outside my pickup door I’d say about six feet. I take Gil’s 22 magnum pistol aim right between the gopher eye’s pull the trigger the gun fires… nothing the gopher still standing there… …looking at us, smiling! Gil says “what happened,” I aim again, pull the trigger again. Stink! I don’t say stink I say “*&#@!, (*&#$$@, and (*^%@!.” The stinking gopher still standing there smiling at us, Gil say “shoot the s-o-b, I say “gotcha now.” I pull the trigger nothing I look at the pistol and say “there is something wrong with this gun.” My cousin Gil says “these nothing wrong with the gun… …it’s the shooter not the gun.” I take another shoot still nothing… Gil explains the 22 will lift six inches the moment it leaves the barrow. I shoot again, the gopher runs away unscathed. Gil laughs again at me… …in my defense I say “yes? But that gopher will never make love again.” Gil laughs at the joke, and continues to explain the ballistics of a 22 magnum to me, I listen.
