Giles L. Smith was born at the family ranch at Olive on April 17, 1921, the son of Frank and Eathel Smith. He passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus, Montana.
Giles grew up on the ranch and attended school at the Sam Smith and Broadus Schools. He was drafted into the military service in 1942 and spent the next 3 years at Madison, Wisconsin. He was sent to Germany in April of 1945 and remained there until December of 1948, returning home that year.
Giles delivered gas for the Beacon Carter distributors out of Miles City for a number of years. He became acquainted with many of the ranchers and farmers of this area and still spoke of them quite often. He and Twyla Herndon were married in February of 1965. After living on a farm in Miles City for a short time they moved to Hamilton, Montana. He lived there for 37 years working as a custodian for the numerous schools, retiring after many years. He remained there for several years after the death of his wife, returning to Biddle, Montana in June of 2006, to make his home near family and friends for the last several years.
Giles liked square dancing, bowling, pool and playing cards. Many card games and bowling on the Wii were enjoyed with family. He enjoyed working on the ranch here, making sure he didn’t miss a branding or any event he could participate in. Gardening was one of his favorite pastimes and he spent many hours planning what he would do.
Giles is survived by one daughter Betty Ann, three grandchildren, Mickie Belle, Mandy and Todd, a sister Myrtle May, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Twyla and his sisters Mildred Steadman, Nell Popp and Agatha (Baye) Schoonover.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 5, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Interment will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Broadus is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

I was sadden to read of the death of Giles. My sincere condolences to the family. He was obviously a man dedicated to his family and his country and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. The Bible gives us hope that soon the Creator will end all suffering, pain, and death. (Revelation 21:4). The Bible also promises a resurrection to everlasting life. We have the hope of being with our loved ones who have been resurrected (John 5:28-29). The promise of Paradise, the perfect conditions God originally intended for mankind will be fulfilled including God’s “will being done as in Heaven also up on Earth ” (Matt 6:9, 10).The prospect of seeing Giles again in God’s due time is a comfort and a promise. May you find comfort in many beautiful memories and talents of Giles at this difficult time and may all reading this note of condolences rely on God who is faithful to all His promises.

We are sadden to learn of Giles’ death. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
We so enjoyed participating in various Masonic functions with Giles, from working the Shrine food booth at the Ravalli County fair to enjoying to eating his home grown corn on the cob at Lodge dinners. Giles taught us how to make the best baked potatoes, we were never sure if he grew them or not. We were sorry to see him leave Hamilton but knew he made the right choice to be with family. Giles will always be a handsome, sweet and kind gentleman.
