Glenn Burton VerBeck, age 94, of Miles City passed on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Holy Rosary Residential Living.
Glenn was born in Miles City, Montana on March 28, 1928, the son of Peter “Pete” John and Doris E. (Cox) VerBeck. His mother passed away when Glenn was 6 and his father then married Eleanor Culp on December 5, 1934. He attended schools in Miles City and then started as an apprentice leather worker with his father at Al Furstnow Saddlery in Miles City. In 1946 he started as an apprentice craftsman for his father at Pete’s Saddle Shop in Miles City working there until October of 1950 when he entered the US Army. He served during the Korean War and was sent to Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He was assigned and trained with the 28th Signal Infantry Division where they were sent to Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Army at Fort Carson, Colorado in October of 1952. He returned to Miles City and worked as a saddle maker and leather craftsman for Pete’s Saddle Shop until March of 1954. He then went to work for Montana State Industrial School (Now Pine Hills Correctional Facility) in Miles City. He later worked for the US Postal Services as a mail handler and clerk. He worked his entire career during the night hours and spent time with his family during the day. Glenn met Yvonne France at the Fireman’s Ball in Miles City on November 23, 1955. They were married on March 17, 1956, in Miles City on St. Patrick’s Day. This loving union lasted 66 years and they were blessed with four children: Mark in 1956, Glenda in 1958, Deanne in 1961 and Rhonda in 1964.
As a dad and grandfather, Glenn could always take the simplest things and make them fun, entertaining, and adventurous. His bedtime stories were never from a book, but always from his creative imagination. Family outings were always an adventure such as hiking on Camelback Hill, going to Medicine Rock, camping, rafting, fishing, rock hunting, etc. He would draw “treasure maps” and take the grandchildren to “Treasure Island” (walking paths by the river to hunt for treasure. In his workshop, he would show his grandchildren how to make various leather goods and how to fix things. He had lots of magic tricks that were always a fun source of entertainment. He was always his grandchildren’s biggest supporter and never missed any of their sporting events. He even watched practices when he had a chance. Glenn’s enjoyment of baseball was carried throughout his life. He played on a baseball team organized by his commanding officer in the military. After returning from the military, he made many life-long friends while playing on the Kinsey team and Pine Hills team.
Glenn was a well-known historian about saddle making and baseball. He compiled amazing amounts of information about both and could recite information astonishingly easy from memory. Although he never finished his book about saddle making, his vast information was used to help others write articles and books. Glenn was such a kind and caring person. He had a positive influence on all of his family, as well as many youth in the community. He spent many years coaching softball and baseball, including his daughter Rhonda’s and grandson’s teams. It was about more than the game to him, he truly cared about young people and helping them reach their full potential. If players didn’t make it to practice, his motto was “we don’t know what they’re dealing with at home, they still get to play because baseball might be what they get to look forward to.”
Glenn and Yvonne were always such perfect complements to each other. They adored each other and their love, friendship, love of family and marriage set such a great example for all their children and grandchildren. Glenn, the husband, father, grandfather, and friend, will be greatly missed by all his family and friends until we meet again. His example of how he lived, will continue to carry on in our hearts.
Glenn is survived by his wife Yvonne of Miles City, MT; his son Mark VerBeck and his children: Robert (fiancée Jen) and children Coltin & Dillon, Angie (Keith) VerBeck and daughter Kayla Guynn, Britni VerBeck and son Cayson Peterson, granddaughter Logan Rodriguez and daughter Ysabella; daughter Glenda (Jack) Lockie and their children: Seth (Anna) and children Kadence, Kara, Kameron, Kaitlyn & Ellie; Shaun (Billie) and children Hayden, Alexis, Austyn & Britton; and Shane and children Hailey (daughter Ellie) & Lillian; daughter Deanne (Quinn) Wright and children Rafe Camp, Evan Keller and son Christopher, Satabra (Boe) Meredith and children Julia, Cleota & Jobi; and daughter Rhonda (Denis) Leidholt and children Kylee (Travis) Nishioka, and daughter Adley, Koby (fiancée Amber) and Kyrtlie. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Eleanor Culp VerBeck; his mother and father-in-law Addie and Hubert France, a sister Gladys Matakovich, Aunt Mary Verbeck and Wade Camp.
