Gloria Jean Kogele Compton was born in Miles City, MT, to Irene Yeager on November 26, 1945. On May 1, 2023, surrounded by her family, she heard her Savior say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Gloria moved around southeast Montana with her mom for the first years of her life. When she was four, she moved to live with her great aunt and started 1st grade at the LO School. Her mom married Will Kogele in 1952, and Gloria got a good dad. She graduated from Broadus High School in 1962. She attended Billings Business College and graduated with a one-year secretarial certificate. She moved back to Broadus and went to work at the county attorney’s office.
In July of 1964 she met a handsome cowboy, Russell Allen Compton, at a Powderville dance. The two were married on May 29, 1965, in Miles City, MT. In November, one day after her 20th birthday, they welcomed their first daughter Kimberly Jean while they were living in Miles City. Shortly after they moved to Belle Creek, MT, they welcomed their only son Kelly Joe in 1968. Their family was complete when their second daughter Kacey Jan was born in 1975. In 1982 they moved into Broadus while still leasing and maintaining a ranch near Belle Creek. During their years of ranching, she was proud of her ability to keep lambs and calves alive in Montana winters.
Gloria’s career choices over the years were many and varied: custodian, writer/editor of the Belle Creek Happenings, secretary, long-time bookkeeper for D & P Electric, and noon duty aide for Broadus Elementary for 19 years; but the job she loved the most was chief cook and bottle washer at home.
Her fierce love for her family showed through by attending every event her kids and grandkids were in that she could make it to. She was a proud fan of the Broadus Hawks, Billings West Bears, and Campbell Co. Camels. She was truly in her happy place when her grandchildren and great grandchildren were around.
She delighted in sewing, reading, gardening, and dancing. As evidenced by her long-standing employment as noon-duty aide at the elementary, she loved children. Her home was open to her kids, grandkids, and all their friends anytime, and she loved them like they were her own. She made clothes for her family when they were young: Barbie doll clothes for her girls, matching square dancing outfits, and prom dresses. Later, she was an avid quilter. All her family has been blessed by her sewing talent. When she wasn’t sewing, she loved reading cheesy romance novels and the Bible. Every spring her green thumb got the best of her, and she planted flowers and a big vegetable garden. She loved to can tomatoes and made the best spaghetti sauce and cabbage rolls with them. Her grandkids thought she made the best caramel rolls and potato salad ever. Gloria loved dancing. She and Russ were quite the pair on the dance floor; after 58 years, they could still make people stop and watch.
Following her acceptance of Christ in high school, Gloria cultivated the ultimate servant heart. She embodied this verse: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…” (Gal. 5:22-23). She lovingly served as custodian and treasurer at Faith Bible Church for many years. Her family considered her their ultimate prayer warrior, and she was a true example of a Proverbs 31 woman. If you spent any time with her, you knew she truly cared for you and wanted you to be the best person you could be.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 58 years, Russell, daughter Kimberly (John) Blain of Broadus, daughter-in-law Kimberly Compton of Libby, daughter Kacey Stanley of Broadus, grandchildren and great-grandchildren Jentry and Lindsie Blain (Jairen, Izabel, and Gidian); Jarett and Georgia Blain (Russell and Halle); Janessa Blain; Garrett and Morgan Compton; Gavin Compton; Kassidy and Jake Richards (Stetson); Kye Stanley; Kendal Stanley; and special cousin Don Kogele.
She was preceded in death by her son Kelly Joe Compton; her parents Wilbert and Irene Kogele; and her sister, Julia Gatlin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gloria’s name to Broadus Elementary School or the Kelly Compton Memorial Fund.

How thankful I am to have her as a friend and sister in Jesus! She leaves a huge void in our community, Faith Bible, and especially her family! But oh the reunions in Heaven, with those that have gone before her!!!
Her faith in Christ was so evident, in many ways, but especially her self-less servants heart!
Keeping all of her precious loved ones lifted up!

My prayers for peace and comfort are with Russ and all the family. I have known Russ and Gloria nearly all of my life. Over the years, they have always been available and willing to help me with advice and encouragement. I cannot even imagine Gloria not being here. She put up with me as one of the Rugrats who stayed the night at Kelly’s birthday parties at Belle Creek. In later years, I benefited from her sewing skills when she helped me as I made a leather purse for my daughter. She was so giving of her time and energy to everyone. Gloria made sure to give me a hug every Sunday at church. I am definitely going to miss her, but I thank the Lord Jesus Christ that if she cannot be here, she is with Him right now!
