Gordon “Gordy” Nelson, age 69, of Colstrip

May 23, 1951 – June 10, 2020

Gordon Neil Nelson, age 69, of Colstrip passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at his home at Colstrip.

Gordy was born on May 23, 1951 in Jordan, Montana, the son of Neil and Helen (Greer) Nelson. He grew up attending grade schools in Jordan, Cohagen, Circle and was homeschooled for a time also. Gordy attended high school at Sacred Heart and graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City. He then attended Miles Community College and a year of auctioneer school. From 1964 – 1974 he worked in the Miles City area for the Nefsy, Coffee and Haughian Ranches, Fort Keogh and for Eddie Vaugh. He married Kathryn Hanley on December 28, 1974 in Baker, Montana. Gordy worked various jobs through the years including Smith Cattle, Agri Empire, Singleton Trucking, Doug & Kim McRae and Coal Dryer Western Energy.

Gordy was an active member of the FFA Alumni, Moose Lodge and the Local 400 International Operators Union. He enjoyed being the center of attention!

Gordon is survived by his wife Kathy Nelson of Colstrip, MT; two sons: Ryan Nelson of Dickinson, ND and Scott Nelson of Colstrip, MT; two grandchildren, Carson and Brooklyn; two brothers: Doug Nelson of Miles City, MT; Frank (Jane) Nelson of Miles City, MT; a sister, Meredith (Dennis) Hirsch of Miles City, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Kay Hanley, sister Margorie Milroy, a granddaughter Samantha Francine Nelson and his friend Darius Stahl.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, 2020 from 1:00-7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds in Miles City. This funeral is being held outdoors to follow along with the State and Local guidelines for social distancing. Those that attend please spread out as much as you can with your families in the grandstands.  Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

    Oh Kathy, Ryan, Scott and family, there aren’t enough words to express all our sympathy on your loss. Gordie was always the one guy everyone could count on. He was always there to help out – be it riding, roping, branding, fires, auctions, concessions, place sitting… the list is long. We so appreciate everything he did. He was a friend to us all and we were proud to call him a friend. His absence will leave a large hole in the community and in all our hearts. May God be with you during this very difficult time.

We all went to school together in Cohagen years ago and although we are not always in close contact, we do remember all the fun and unforgettable times then and since then. So many great memories, from mugging wild horses for me back in ’68 to working at the mine . We won a couple of buckles together. He will be truly missed.     Gordon was a great friend of our family for a lot of years. Had a nice visit with him over lunch just last Saturday at Melin’s branding. He always had a kind word for everyone and a special kindness for the little kids. He will be missed by all of us, but leaves a wealth of good memories.

    When I was growing up there was the Nelson kids and the Robertson kids. There was all the holidays together. The fun we had was some of the best. They were like our cousins.     Kathy, Ryan and Scott…such deep sadness and tears…Gordy was a part of my life starting when Mrs. Davenport babysat him across the street from our house, in Jordan!     We had just enjoyed a wonderful day of branding with Gordy, Kathy, and Scott on Saturday. He was the best friend a person could have, and will be greatly missed. Our grand kids loved every minute of his non stop teasing and the time he spent with them. We will always cherish those memories.

    I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I met Gordy for the first time during district tournament concessions in February. In the brief time I visited with him then, I learned how much he cared for his community and providing opportunity for Colstrip’s youth. He will absolutely be missed be all who knew him.

    Gordon or Gordie, I will always remember you as Hook! Remember the days at C&C Cattle Company. You were a great friend and inspiration on a young kid from Broadus! Never forget your burn-outs on hy-way 59 in the old brown Ford!     Classmate friends are never forgotten, even tho paths take us to other directions. I have such fond memories of Gordy when he attended CCHS and boarded with our Waldo family.     I have started this several times and I just haven’t been able to get through it. With an extremely heavy heart is when I was told about the loss of Gordy. Now I am trying to let you all know how truly sorry that I am. Please know that Gordy was an amazing man but you all already know that. Please know that I am going to miss him very much. I always enjoyed running into him at the gas station or on the back roads where he was running around with ranchers out there. Please know that you all are in my thoughts n prayers.
