Grace was born July 26, 1912 to Everett and Elizabeth (Grabeldinger) Zwolle in Springfield, South Dakota. The family moved several times as her father was a Milwaukee Railroad employee. She received her schooling in many different rural schools. She met her future husband, Dan Carter at Christina, Montana and they were married on December 1, 1928. They started their lives together farming in that area. Then in 1941, they moved to Kinsey, Montana to continue farming.

Grace had many hobbies, among them knitting, handcrafts, crocheting, playing the organ. She was involved in many civic duties, as she was chairperson of the Democratic Central Committee for Custer and Powder River Counties as well as serving all the chairs in the Women of the Moose and was active in the Drill team. While living at Kinsey, the family and friends enjoyed many get-togethers during the summer months. Grace worked for ten years in the bakery at Buttreys Food Store before moving to Helena to be near some of her family after the passing of her husband. After moving there she worked for the SRS as a social aid until her retirement.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, son Richard, her parents, five brothers, one sister, two grandchildren: Tim Taylor and Scott Carter and one great grandchild, Michael Carter.

She is survived by her children: Elnor Johnson of Helena, Curtis (Suzanne) Carter and Betty OBrien all of Othello, WA, and Gary (Judy) Carter of Billings, MT; one brother, Donald (Barlene) Zwolle of Glendale, AZ, eleven grandchildren: Ken Taylor, Beverly Alexander, Duane Carter, Keith Carter, Deb Gilbert, Connie Jacobsen, Katie Collins, Shawn Raberge, Michael Carter, Amber and Ryan Carter, and twenty seven great grandchildren.
