In Memory Of

Harvey Uthaug, age 72, of Jordan

May 20, 1949 – April 29, 2022

Harvey Lee Uthaug, age 72, of Jordan, MT, passed away at the Advanced Care Hospital in Billings, MT on April 29th, 2022, with his wife and daughters by his side. He battled with Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Harvey (Harv) was born in Jordan, MT, on May 20th, 1949, to Carl and Martha (Klassen) Uthaug, joining his older brothers Gary and Wayne and his twin sister, Carla.

He graduated from Garfield County High School in 1967 and attended Eastern Montana College in Billings. After college, Harvey traveled to the east coast with a friend and drove show horses to different destinations up and down the coast. He later returned to the family ranch where he dedicated his life to the family’s heritage.

On June 15, 1974, Harvey married his best friend and partner of 47 years, Marilyn (Shafer), in Jordan. To this union, two daughters were born, Mandy Lee in 1977 and Amber Renee, eighteen months later, in 1979.

Harvey was an incredibly hard-working man. In addition to being a farmer and rancher, he was a skilled mechanic, carpenter, and electrician. One thing Harvey could not stress enough was taking pride in your work. It didn’t matter if it delayed other pending tasks for a few days; he never wanted something cobbled together. He believed in diligence and a job well done.

In addition to his quick wit and contagious smile, another of Harvey’s many endearing qualities was his soft spot for animals, always ensuring all critters had something to eat and were cared for. He was even known to relocate rattlesnakes that wandered into the yard.

Harvey’s true passion resided at the place, always making sure work was done first. He took pride in maintaining the ranch and was also a big advocate for planting trees and shelterbelts. And, when time allowed, Harvey enjoyed building things. Over the years, he constructed a house, barn, corrals, a lookout tower, and many other projects. His relaxation time was usually spent driving around the ranch in his side-by-side, looking at wildlife and, occasionally, having a good visit with a neighbor he may encounter on the county road.

Harvey was preceded in death by his father and mother, Carl and Martha Uthaug, and his brothers, Gary, and Wayne Uthaug.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn; daughters, Mandy (Jaime) Sharp and Amber Uthaug Hunter, and her significant other, Jeff Jedlicka; grandchildren Jaiman and Story Sharp and Kooper and Tanner Hunter; sister Carla (Daryl) Carlson, and their children Todd (Maggie) Carlson and Brittany (Will) Bass; nieces and nephews Dean, Jaci, and Lindsay (Randy) Degele.

If desired, memorials in Harvey’s name may be made to the Jordan Ambulance Fund, Jordan Volunteer Fire Department, or a charity of one’s choice.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at Stevenson and Sons in Jordan. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 11:00 am at the VFW Hall- Jordan. A luncheon will follow the Funeral Service. Interment will take place at the Family Ranch following the luncheon at 1:30 pm.

Marilyn, Mandy. Amber and all of Harvey’s family – My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. Harvey was such a great guy – Allen thought he was a very good county committee man for the ASC years ago and I loved to visit with him whenever I got the chance (like when I was walking the dog in your neighborhood) or bumming a ride to a track meet – he will be missed by all. May all your good memories comfort you at this time. God Bless you all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I worked for Carl during the summers when I was in High School. Harvey and I worked together moving cattle, cutting and stacking hay, fencing and many other ranch and farm jobs. It was a very memorable time. He was very well informed on farming, and it was always nice to visit with him over the years. He will be missed. Rest in Peace Harvey.

Marilyn, Carla and family, Harvey’s passing is so sad and so shocking. He was such a great guy. His passing brought back so many wonderful memories of times when our family would come to visit from Canada to the ranch. Those were such good visits and always something we looked forward to, they will always be remembered. Sadly alot of years have passed and somehow we didn’t connect often. I sincerely regret that. I think of you all often and know how difficult his passing is for all his family. My sincere sympathy to you all.
