In Loving Memory
Hazel Ann Killsnight
October 23, 1984 – June 27, 2025
Hazel Ann Killsnight, born on October 23, 1984, in Lame Deer, Montana, passed away peacefully in her beloved home in Ballantine, Montana, on June 27, 2025, at the age of 40.
Hazel was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Theresa and James Crazymule, at the Cut Across. She enjoyed a warm and happy childhood, often helping her dad with his C&M Sanitation Company and learning the art of breadmaking. Hazel shared a special bond with her mother, traveling across the country as they danced in jingle dress ceremonies, a tradition she held close to her heart.
A spirited and independent young woman, Hazel attended St. Labre Indian School, where she played sports and made lifelong memories. In her adult years, she met Waylon, and together they had five beautiful children: Montana Dempsey James Burns, Shania Lynn Burns, Shakira Rain Burns, and Annie Marie Theresa Burns.
Hazel was incredibly proud of her children; they were her greatest joy and constant source of strength. She spoke of them often and with deep love. She was also a devoted grandmother to four grandchildren: Ariya Lashae Blackwolf, Kaisean Adrian John Burns, Lorenzo Roman Lopez, and Leileigh Rain Lopez.
She later married her best friend and husband, Jimmy Todd. The two shared a deep and loving bond. Hazel cherished spending time with Jimmy, whether fishing, taking long drives, or enjoying quiet walks. She also adored her cat, Sneakers, who was spoiled with affection.
Hazel worked as a firefighter for Tribal Forestry, as well as a secretary for liheap, where she brought organization and positivity to her role. Her warm, radiant smile could light up any room, and her laughter was truly contagious. Despite life’s challenges, Hazel remained full of light, resilience, and humor. She had an incredible gift for finding joy, even in difficult times.
Hazel is survived by her children and grandchildren, as well as extended family members who loved her deeply: Clifford (Octa), Clayton (Maha), Horace Jr., Georgiann (Bruce), Jennie, Wanda, Carla, Gail (Joe), Geri, Max, Clarice, Vance, Geofredo, Carlos, and her special niece, DeWanda. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Our family is large, and we apologize if we have unintentionally left anyone out.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Edna Killsnight; her father, Courdell Small; her grandparents, Theresa and James Crazymule; and many beloved relatives from the Killsnight and Small families.
Hazel’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a bright light, a devoted mother and grandmother, a beloved wife, and a true friend. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
