Helen Landess Follmer, age 74 passed away on January 19, 2021 from heart failure.
Helen was born to Charles and Verna June Landess on September 29, 1946 in Powell, WY. The family relocated often, living in Powell and Casper, WY, Miles City and Glendive, MT. One of her first jobs was as a phone operator. She met and married Leonard Follmer in 1965. They moved to the family farm 18 miles south of Plevna where they farmed, ranched and raised their 6 children. In 1987 they sold the farm and moved to Miles City, MT. In Miles City she worked at Kmart, Walmart and the MC Saddlery. She also proudly owned and operated the Pioneer Video. She met so many wonderful people and made lots of friends thru the store.
Helen was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Going to church was the highlight of her week. Along with her mother, following her grandmother’s example, she was instrumental in doing genealogical research for much of her fathers’ ancestral family. Many emails were exchanged with her mom. Also, multiple visits together at history libraries pouring over microfiche films. Once in Salt Lake City with family she was touring the Temple grounds and said “Oh, if I could just touch the outside walls of the Temple I’d think I’d died and gone to heaven.” She later took out her own endowments and enjoyed the privilege of attending the Billings Temple several times. On one of these trips she was sealed to her parents and sister. On another visit to Salt Lake City, she touched the walls and actually entered inside. She participated in ordinances for and on behalf of some deceased ancestors along with other family members. Thru this research she became very adept at using the computer and printer which enhanced her skills of research.
Helen is survived by her husband Leonard of 55 years and her children: Cynthia Christianson and husband Dennis her son Daniel and daughter Alicia with her husband Richard and four sons: Roman, Joel, Rhys and Riley from Billings, MT; Paulette Baugatz and husband John her daughter Monique and Cody and two kids Tobin and Otto, son Bradley of Billings and daughter Melinda and Bryan and daughter Kathlynn of Casper, WY, Jeanette and husband Nick of Spokane, WA; Jodi and her two sons Cile and Keelen of Sidney, MT; Connie and husband wade and two daughters Century and Malayna of Billings, MT; and her son Gene of Miles City. She is also survived by her sister Debbie Dyer and two brothers Jerry and Don (Corita) Landess and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her dad Charles and mom Verna June Landess, one son Andrew who lived for a couple hours before the Lord took him home.

I have known Helen for many, many years. I have fond memories of when she owned Pioneer Video back when that kind of business could still thrive. Her quiet tenacity to achieve her goals was often hidden behind her challenges with self-confidence. But she knew what she wanted in life and quietly sought to achieve her goals. I admired her steady commitment to be the best person she could. My sincere condolences go to all of Helen’s family. I am a better person for having known her.

Oh how I adored Helen. She was such a special lady to our family and played a really instrumental role in watching out for me and my siblings as a second Grandma. We loved to walk to the video store and say hi to Helen after we got a treat from Bill’s Minute Market next door. We loved when she would let us rent a movie for free. In kid world that was the BEST. She and my Mom were dear friends and I remember after my youngest sister was born she took great care to check on us and my Mom to make sure we were all doing ok. Her love for God and her family was always ever present and she was proud of her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed and I hope your family can have peace in your hearts in the coming days. You are her legacy to be sure.

Dear Follmer and Landess families, It is with a heavy heart that I received notice via email today of Helen’s passing. We knew the Landess family in the early 1960’s when their family moved into the court just about 3 lots down from our family. What a joy it was to have this wonderful family become our new friends! Helen, Jerry, Debbie and Donny were heaven sent as far as I was concerned. Many years went by, we learned eventually that Helen had married Leonard and lived in Miles City. Thankfully because of that we were actually able to see each other a few times over the years. She had such a peaceful personality, and was so talented. May you be strengthened, upheld and comforted during the days ahead. I have to admit it makes me smile to think of Helen seeing June again. May Father’s blessings be with you.

Helen has been a dear friend since we moved to Miles City 18 years ago. We worked together in several capacities and through these associations, we found that we had a lot in common and developed a great fondness for each other. Helen was very creative and always had something she was working on that she would share with me. We spent many hours talking and planning for crafts we intended to make, she could make neat things out of just about anything. We harvested cukes from her garden and made pickles, we planted flowers together, we laughed and smiled a lot when we were together. She had a great love for animals and I enjoyed her various creatures she had over the last several years. Mostly, I will miss the gentle and kind way she took care of me, like a mom would. Helen is a priceless treasure to me and I look forward to the day when our friendship can continue. To all of her family, thank you for sharing Helen with me. I love you all for that!

LEONARD AND KIDS. SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR WIFE AND MOM. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE 4 YEARS I SPENT LIVING IN YOUR HOME AND WORKING YOUR FARM DURING SUMMER VACATIONS WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL FROM 1972 TO 1975. I REMEMBER LIVING UPSTAIRS IN THE OLD HOUSE AND THEN YOU BUILT THE NEW HOUSE WHERE I ROOMED DOWNSTAIRS. HELEN ALWAYS HAD A GREAT MEAL ON THE TABLE AFTER A LONG DAYS WORK WITH LEONARD AND EVEN A GREAT LUNCH BROUGHT OUT TO THE FIELD WHERE WE WERE WORKING. A GREAT PERSON INDEED, VERY KIND AND CARING ATTITUDE. FROM A PERSON FROM VERY LONG AGO BUT YET IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY.
Xina says

My family loved sitting next to Helen at church each chance we had. We all admired her artistic talents of jewelry making and handicrafts. She so kindly encouraged my oldest daughter to try more medium of art. I enjoyed discussing our shared love of family genealogy work. I admired her ability to share her opinions on various matters, even if it wasn’t popular. What a wonderful lady! We will miss her. Please know that our prayers go out to all those that are grieving her loss.
Dee Dee Kane says
I remember Helen from the times she ran the Video store in the old LaGrangers site and our house was just one block over and we would rent movies and the VCR to play the movies. Oh how times have changed. To her husband, sons and daughters, especially Connie and her partner Wade Rasmussen along with many grandchildren like Century and Malayna, I want to express my deep sympathy. The heartache of losing a mother and grandmother is very hard. But knowing Helen’s deep faith, we can find comfort in knowing, we will meet again!
