Herbert John Sackman, 81, of Terry, Montana, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Billings Clinic Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Herb was born May 11, 1943, to John and Mary (Hoffer) Sackman. He grew up on the family farm ten miles southeast of Terry, along with his sister Delores. He attended Terry Public Schools, graduating in 1961. That fall he attended Northern Montana College in Havre to study welding.
On July 1, 1966, Herb married LaVonne Darlene Myhre, daughter of Elmer and Lucille Myhre of Sheyenne, North Dakota, in a double wedding with LaVonne’s sister Karen and her husband Odean. After living in Terry for a year while LaVonne taught fifth grade, they moved to the family farm on Broadview Bench where they have farmed and ranched since. Herb and LaVonne welcomed three children, Scott, Vicki, and Bob.
Herb was a lifetime member of the Community Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder for several years. He enjoyed playing in a bowling league and going to dances in town on Saturday nights during his younger years. He devoted his life to his family and took great pride in farming and ranching with his family by his side. He especially enjoyed haying, summer fallowing, and working cattle in the fall. He was always the first to arrive in the hay fields before dawn and was helping feed cows every day this winter before his short illness. Without question, his grandchildren were his greatest joy. He loved when the family gathered for holidays, especially Christmas, when the house was full and games around the kitchen table lasted into the early hours.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his sister; his sister-in-law, Doris Throlson; brother-in-law, Erling Myhre; and sister-in-law, Paula Myhre.
Herb is survived by his wife of 58 years, LaVonne; son Scott (Lisa) Sackman of Terry; daughter Vicki (Dave) Thompson of Billings; and son Bob (Sharla) Sackman of Terry; grandchildren Tyler (Tina) Sackman, Sara (Pete) Lind, John (Kenzie) Thompson, Erin Thompson, Matty Sackman, and Hayden Sackman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Karen and Odean Olson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Carol Myhre; and many nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Terry Community Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the family lot of Prairie County Cemetery.

Stan Pehl says
Herb and the Sackman family are valued neighbors and friends, I still have fond memories of playing cards with them at wintertime many years ago. Carol and I pass along condolences and prayers to LaVonne and the family Our best to you all.
Betty Thompson says
Leon and I send our prayers for comfort and care to the Sackman family as they mourn Herb’s death. Herb and Lavonne became part of our family when our son David Thompson met Vicki at Mntana State University Bozeman and then married in 1992. Herb welcomed us “city” folks from Alaska and shared his love for the land and Montana and his family everytime we gathered for family celebrations. Again we pray that Lavonne, Vicki, Scott, Bobby and grandchildren will know God’s love and care for them. Blessing and love, Leon and Betty Thompson

LaVonne and families,
My deepest sympathies to each of you, dear friends.
We’ve celebrated life’s beginnings and endings during decades of friendship, including journeys on land and at sea, holiday gatherings, Sunday chats/dinners and even gathering eggs at odd hours. Our experiences have certainly enhanced my life.
Herb was a lot of fun, loved his rural life and maintained a well-groomed summer fallow field! I’m blessed to have you as friends who have become family.
Love and sympathy. May God give you the extra strength needed in these most difficult days.
Love and prayers,
Darlene
