Howard Arthur Henderson, age 91, of Miles City passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at home surrounded by his wife and family.
Howard was born to Agnes and Andrew Henderson on June 4, 1923 in Edgemont, South Dakota. Howard was a cattle rancher most of his life. He was raised on his parent’s ranch in Provo, SD for 68 years and then moved to Miles City, Montana where he bought a ranch on the Tongue River and ranched until 1995. He married Lorraine Eshleman on October 31, 1951. To this union two children were born: Jane Henderson Hardin of Tucson, Arizona and David H. Henderson of Miles City, Montana. After Lorraine’s death in 1966, Howard later married Sharon Schleve on December 13, 1968 in Edgemont, SD. To this union one son, Scott Andrew Henderson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota was born. Howard was a cattle rancher through and through. He was a hard worker and was active working until the time of his death. Howard used to say his longevity came from hard work, having a drink of good Scotch and eating beef. Howard believed in hard work and passed that belief on to many generations as well as his belief in having family and moral values. He was never a slacker and continued to work almost up until the time of his death.
Howard flew a yellow piper cub plane from 1950 to 1985. He loved to take family and friends for rides. He was a lifetime member of the Elks, served on the Edgemont, SD school board and was active in the St. James Parish at Edgemont, SD.
Howard is survived by: his wife Sharon, children Jane (Willie), Dave and Scott (Kristy), sisters Mary (Joe) Girard of Grove City, Ohio; Trudy Crosby of Chevy Chase, Maryland; a brother Bob (Pat) Henderson of Cheyenne, Wyoming; sister-in-laws Pamela Henderson of Tucson, Arizona, Joyce Nicolaus of Yankton, SD and Judy (Garry) Adam of Spearfish, SD; grandchildren Lorraine and Joshua Hardin, Marilyn Henderson and Gavin Henderson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Murray and Walter, sister Maxine and a grandson Kelly Henderson.
