Ian Elliot

Memorial service: Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City

Interment: will follow in the Custer County Cemetery

Ian A. Elliot, 88 of Bozeman, formerly of Miles City, MT passed away Friday March 28th, 2008 at the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.

He was born September 10th, 1919 in Epsie, MT, 80 miles south of Miles City (yes in a log cabin), to James and Mabel (Sweetman) Elliot. He attended school in Miles City and Big Timber Montana, and Casper Wyoming. Ian graduated from high school in Miles City, Montana. He studied Electrical Engineering at Intermountain Polytechnic in Billings, MT. He took extension courses in radio and television from the American Television Institute and Nilson School of Radio.

Ian met Lucel Munson in Terry, Montana where he was the Managerof the Sawyers Store. They married August 29, 1940 in Glendive. He Joined KRJF at Miles City in 1941 as an engineer-announcer and shortly after was promoted to Chief Engineer. Mr. Elliot was also Assistant Manager and Technical Director of KLIX, Twin Falls Radio from 1948-49. HE then returned to KRJF as General Manager in 1950. Ian was Vice President and Director of Star Printing Company from 1955-1965, (publisher of daily newspaper and owner of Miles City radio station.) Along with Bob Magness and Paul McAdam, Ian organized Micro-TV, the Miles City cable TV system in 1961, where he was president.

Ian was a past president of the Montana Broadcaster Association and the Montana Cable Television Association. Ian held a position as President of the Pacific Northwest Cable Television Association. He served two terms on the Nation Association of Broadcasters Radio copyright committee. He is past Chairman of the Radio Industry Advisory Committee of the FCC (SIAC). Mr. Elliot also was a charter member of the Society of Broadcaster Engineers, and the Broadcaster Pioneers. He was awarded the Junior Member of Commerce Boss of the Year certificate. He was Vice President of both the Senior and Junior Chambers of Commerce in Miles City. He was a past president of the Miles City Rotary and Toastmaster clubs and was Vice Chairman of the Custer County Junior College Advisory board. He was a ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church; a member of various Masonic bodies and the Al Bedoo Shrine, Elks, Miles City Club and The Montana Pilot Association.

Elliots hobbies included fishing, skiing, flying, golfing and amateur radio, (having been a licensed amateur since 1941 as well as having FCC First Phone license.) Elliot and his wife Lucel have one son, a retired Optometrist who served in the Air Force and then lived in Miles City for 32 years.Ian and Lucel moved to Bozeman in 1965 and worked for TCI Cable TV. After retirement, Ian took care of Lucel when she could no longer get out. He also served on the Montana Board of Pardons and continued to enjoy his hobbies.

In Bozeman he was a member of the Bozeman Noon Rotary Club, the First Presbyterian Church, and the Bozeman Ham Radio Club.In 2007 Ian moved to Aspen Pointe at Hillcrest.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucel who passed away in 1999, and grandson Kevin Holmlund.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law James and Karen Elliot of Surprise, AZ; daughter Linda Marie (George) Cloud of Springfield, OR; grandchildren, Vikki (Leland) Bohlman of Helena, MT, Amy (John) Frazey of Portland, OR, Heather Elliot of Caldwell, ID, Kris Holmlund of Oregon and Angela Waibel; and great-grandchildren, Deanna, Krysten, and Erin Bohlman, all of Helena, MT, and Joshua Garlington, and Zachary Waibel of Oregon.

A memorial service to celebrate Ians life will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday April 1, 2008 at the Chapel in Aspen Pointe at Hills Crest. Memorial services in Miles City will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County Cemetery.
