Ignacy “Iggie” Grywusiewicz, age 84, of Miles City passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at his home in Miles City.
Ignacy was born on December 27, 1935 in Podegrodzie, Poland to Peter and Kazimiera (Zubkiewicz) Grywusiewicz. His job on his family farm was tending the cattle when he was not in school. In 1943, the family was taken by the Nazi’s to a Dakow prison camp in Germany where the family endured forced labor until 1945. In 1949, the Catholic Church brought the family to the United States and on to Ashland, Montana. He worked on St. Labre Mission farm and attended school at S. Labre School. At the age of 14, his English tutor was an 8 year old girl. In 1952, the family moved to Miles City where he attended Sacred Heart School. He was the kicker for the football team and earned the nickname “Toe” (Kicks field goals with both feet and sometimes misses). He graduated in 1955 and joined the Army. He served as a tanker in an armored division in Korea where he received citizenship in Seoul. After the war, he became a doodle bugger (seismographer) ending up in Lander, Wyoming where he met and married Georgia Woolet in 1959. They had four sons. He worked for Kaiser Steel in Eagle Mountain, California in the late 60’s and 70’s as a welder. In the early 70’s, he coached his boys little league baseball team. They moved back to Wyoming in 1972 and later divorced. He married Myrna Tucker and later divorced. He traveled around Wyoming and Colorado working road construction for 20 years, retiring in the early 90’s. He later returned to Miles City to take care of his parents.
Iggie enjoyed growing tomatoes and tinkering with inventions to make his life easier. He also enjoyed running the family still with the help of his brother John. He had a regular trap line to the local drinking establishments and was a generous and giving man with a true sense of fairness and a unique sense of humor.
